I owned three slash-sevens, an R80/7, R100RT/7, and an R60/7. The R80 and R100 were bought used, the R60 was new. I still have the R60 (it is 26 years old this year, a 1977). I have always loved riding the R60. It certainly isn't a techno as my 03 K1200LTE, but it is a joy. It is like a ride in yesteryear.

How about others. I'd like to hear from other slash-seven owners.

I've got an 82 R100RT that I bought new. It's doesn't get ridden much anymore but it still runs great.

Hello,I owned an R80/7 in 1978.Bought it brand new after one year with a 550 honda four. The deal was ,you received the lufty fairing and krauser bags for the original price around $3200 back then. That was a lot of $ for a bike back then ,but oh what a machine it was. This bike was beautiful, ran flawlessly and I wish I had never traded it for a 1985 K100RS.I was initially impressed with that K bike, but it soon became clear it wasn't what I wanted.I never quite liked the K.And I think many other people felt the same.Soon the market was flooded with K bikes new owners tired of and the prices tumbled for used ones. But,at that time unleaded fuel was dissappearing from gas staions everywhere. This R80 motor ran on high test leaded perfectly. You could ride up a hill loaded for touring in a driving rain at just above 3000 rpm and that thing just pulled with no complaint.I think early attempts to make a good unlead high octane were not completely successful.I know that my R80 ran hot and pinged even with a name brand unlead.Instead of doing the mods that were talked about in the press at that time,I thought it would be better to get a bike that could burn the new stuff without complaint.I think the /7s were probably the last bm's built adhering to the old ideas of making it the best it could be built.I never had a problem with that bike on the road.Put an s fairing on it and that was my bike.loved it.Ed

The post date on that would have made it 26 years old at the time of the post. The post date was in 2003.

Newly purchased in February'78(Valentines Day:)) and I still have it after almost 30 years and 300000 miles. I just mounted a new alternator from Omega. I love the bike and still ride it regularly, as you can tell from the mileage. Having many, many BMW's through the years to date, I have never managed to keep one more than about 7 years except this one special /7. My first National Rally was Vermont'78 in Rutland that year and I was aboard the newly purchased /7. I JUST rode it again from California to Burlington, Vermont for the '06 National Rally,"again! About 10000 miles exactly from my doorstep to Vermont and back, via a lot of Canada and the USA:). Smiles all the way.....My new KLT1200 has been quite a switch from the oldie and I love the comparisons. Many GS's through the years too, but I still come back to the /7 and could never sell it. Its equipped with a nice Parrabellum Scout fairing. Heinrick 9 gallon tank, Aerostitch tank panniers, original Bill Mayer Seat and the original Krauser bags,etcetc...I really do think its a throwback to BMW craftsmanship of old. The last one! It truely was the last of the slash bikes, because the /'s went away in '79. Happy Trails to all aboard their old loves........Randy13233:)

Yeah, I probably will someday and no doubt on the /7 again:)....It was a hoot coming back there again after a long period of absense in NE. I did come to Trenton, Ontario, but not into the NE states, etc. The Trenton rally was aboard my newly purchased KLT1200. I really had a great trip on the R100/7 last year and need to write about it for the Owners News sometime. It really has some human interest for this crowd... Happy Trails,Randy13233 / 30+ year member now:)

The trip has so many good photo's and I need a url to get them through in this medium for sure. I have to consider this story for it has bugged me not telling it and like I said, it has good stuff! The recent Haul Road Story was a goody in the 'ON Mag and I can add another with some effort, that will most likely get some attention too:) Hang in there and when you see it, you'll know the author:usa Happy Trails, Randy13233
