This doesn't appear good - certainly expensive, I think. I've got oil weeping/leaking out of the clutch vent in the bottom of the crankcase on my 04' 1150RT. Can anyone guess from which seal it's leaking from? What is this going to cost me? Yikes!!

Transmission input shaft seal or engine rear crankshaft seal probably.

What does it smell like? engine oil or higher sulfur gear oil?

It smells like engine oil. It looks like I'm up for a high service charge. Is this common on these bikes? It has about 28000 miles on it. One more question, is the clutch vent located on the bottom of the crankcase directly behind the oil filter cavity about 1.25 inches back?

I took my bike to my dealer and showed the weep/leak to the mechanic. As it turns out, I misidentified where it was coming from. It's not from the clutch vent, but a "freeze plug" in the bottom of the crankcase located 1.25" behind the oil filter cavity. It can be replaced from below at a material cost of about $1.00.

Unfortunately, this a all too common on BMWs. On my three BMWs (RT, LT and GS), I have had to replace the transmission input shaft seal on the RT and LT. On two occasions, the leak was bad enough to soil the clutch plates on my LT and RT, costing about $1,000. Then again, the bikes have a combined mileage of 250K.

My GS just lost the transmission input shaft seal with only 28k on this bike, costing my $1,500 since the clutch plate and a multitude of other parts needed replacing.

I have my dealer check this seal every 30-40K when greasing the splines. With 300,000 miles on BMWs, I have only replaced one clutch from wear. Most of the time it from leaking seals.
