Hi felllow oilheads. I will soon be changing the belt on my 04 R-1150-RT. I've done two on my 94 R-1100-RS but is was a while ago. Any thing different on the 04 from the 94? While on this subject, I'm approaching 36,000 miles. I changed the two on my 94 right at the required mileage. Can I safely go a thousand or so over with out too much worry? I have a few rides coming up this month and don't want to tie up the bike in case I screw up the belt change. Thanks in Advance.

Some 1100s had an extra breather pipe in the way of the belt, some don't. Other than that, they are the exact same procedure once you get the plastic off. You have to remove the left shark fin to get the belt cover off.
The changing frequency isn't written in stone. I have gone 42000 miles between changes, and the belts looked brand new.

If you are an RA member, see the latest OTL. Anton L. wrote a good article on alternator belts on the oilhead/hexhead line. As I recall, he said the later oilheads have a different tensioning system than the earlier ones. The later oilheads are similar to the hexheads, where you set the tension by measuring the distance between the pulleys. (I have no personal experience with this. I did not stay at a Holiday Inn Express, but I did read Anton's article.)
