We are currently reassembling the Rear Drive Unit on a 2001 R1150 RT after replacing the oil seal and pivot bearings. I have not been able to find out if the drive shaft universal needs to be in faze at 180% apart or does it even matter when we mate the splines. I know on a truck with a longer drive shaft, the drive shaft will vibrate if the universals are not aligned 180% apart, but then again the drive shaft on the bike is a lot shorter. Does anyone have any idea, as the manual I have makes no reference to the orientation of the universals? Look forward to any suggestions.

They have to match phasing...when the front part of the front universal is flat, the rear half of the back universal has to be flat.

Here is an illustration. Sorry about that square shaft, but ... :)

I would like to thank both of you for your help.

Tomorrow I will be putting the unit back together, and then I am on my way for a ride to visit TN, NC and all states in between from Ontario Canada.

So I will give it a good test.

Looking forward to this for a year.
