I have 10,000 miles on my R1200R and just did my second oil change. Both times, I noticed a "hot oil" smell when the bike was warmed up. On the first change, this persisted for a week or so. I didn't overfill and I washed off any spilled oil after I did the changes. Anyone got an idea?

Um, you've got oil on something hot?

(Seriously, if nothing is making a puddle on the floor, you've got no leaks and nothing to worry about.)

I know this is a touchy area, but ...... have you showered since you changed the oil?:laugh

Are you down wind from a McDonalds by any chance? Sorry I used to live near a McNugget factory. (parts is parts)

It is probably impossible to get all of the spilled oil off of an exhaust by wiping or even washing. Just washing the exhaust can leave enough reside to create an odor. If there is no flame, or an amount of smoke that makes flame likely, and there is nothing leaking, then what the last guy said.

I notice the same thing but now after draining the oil and removing the filter, take some time cleaning where the filter mounts. Oil will ride up along the cooling fins and grooves in the casting also the cavity for the filter. So now i wipe it down good then wash the underside before the start up, problem gone. The oil takes days to completely burn off.

Thanks. That is the first response that made any sense. I did a quick wipe of the filter well area, but not a thorough cleaning and although I cleaned the heads and valve covers, I doubt I did a good job of cleaning the fins on the bottom.
