My bike came with the NavII mounted between the handlebars. I want to move it to an accessory shelf above the dash but the wire isn't long enough. There is a single wire coming up from under the tank thru the front forks. It splits in two at the mounting bracket, with one wire going to theleft keypad and the other end to the power connection on the right keypad.

Can I just cut the wire and add a splice at a point before it splits in two? Are there just two wires inside? Am I missing something?

I did the exact thing you are contemplating. There is a full story here: http://www.bmwmoa.org/forum/showthread.php?t=22932.

The most difficult part of the project involved cutting and soldering the Nav II cable. You will find a total of 5 very small strands of wire, maybe 24 gauge or smaller. They were color coded if I remember correctly, but I did test each connection to make certain.

The splice has worked perfectly since Jan 2008, with no ill effects on the unit, the comm system or any other inter-related electronics. If you feel comfortable cutting and soldering very thin wire, then I say 'Go for it!' Remember to shrink wrap everything to protect it from the weather.

Thanks, Art. I had a feeling there were some surprises inside the sheathing.:thumb
