I have another boxer noob question. When will the pinging & surging start? I just rolled over 8,000 miles on my 04 GS Adventure & I don’t think I have had any surging or pinging. Can someone tell me what surging & pinging are as well as what it sounds/feels like? Also at about how many miles do these symptoms present themselves?
This bike is my first BMW & so far I have been blessed with 8,000 problem free, fun miles.
Thanks in advance.

If you are not surging outof the box, then you shouldn't surge at all. The twin plug oilheads have not had any surging problems that I know of.

I agree with Lorazepam - the dual sparks should not be surging. My previous bike, R1100RL, had a mild case. It showed up the most at 25-35 mph and the bike surged like you were gassing slightly and letting up.
Never had "pinging" in that bike or my new dual spark - which has not demonstrated surging in 9100 miles.
May your rides be surge and ping free!!

Thanks, I will add surging & pinging to my list of things not to worry about.

Ah-haaaa. My '02 R1100S surges then....I get that "bucking" throttle feeling at 25-35 mph. I bought my bike used (4200 mi) and now it's approaching 6000 mi. Since I plan on bringing it in to the shop for the service, I'll be interested to see if the problem is corrected through any adjustments made by the tech after reading the engine. If not, I'll seriously consider a Techlusion box. The alternative 2nd plug add-on kit must be alot more expensive I would imagine.

Forget the dual plug for you R1100S. Just get a Techlusion 83i or 259 EFI box, have it setup properly and that should get rid of your surging problem..
My 2002 R1150RS single spark has 22500 miles, at 21K miles, I installed a Techlusion 83i EFI box.
I never thought that my R1150RS had much surging problem, I ride above 4000 rpm 95% of the time. But within two blocks of riding with the Techlusion EFI box, I notice significant smoothness of the engine even with 1st gear at 2000 rpm. It is amazing how much different my bike feels since the Techlusion.
:bliss :clap
Note: Techlusion require proper set-up to perform, have someone adjust the Techlusion EFI box with a voltmeter before test riding.
There are plenty of resources for Techlusion installation/adjustments on the internet.
