Ok, so my 97 R11RT died last week. It is just shy of 77,000 miles. Luckily I was close to home and pulling out of traffic when it just shut down like I had hit the kill switch.
I trouble shot and spoke with the Master Tech at Miller BMW. We both agreed the HES was the most likely suspect. So I ordered one installed it. I built the really cool timing box at http://users.rcn.com/dehager/service/oilhead_timing_box.pdf. So timing has been set.
It still just spins and spins and will not fire. :scratch
I have good spark, new plugs 1k ago, and the injectors are squirting as they should. Relays are good did the swap with horn relay test and it seems ok.
Any thoughts? Motronic failure?
Thanks ahead of time for responses!

Scott,
Have you verified you have good compression? Valves OK? At least 45psi of fuel pressure? Is the spark happening at the correct time? Did you get the timing 'cup' installed with the keyway correctly? How did you set TDC to check the timing? With the locating mandrel?

I have not checked compression nor valves yet. Not really sure how to check the compression. I will have to research that a bit today.
I believe the spark is happening when it is supposed to. More to research
I did line up the timing cup keyway, correctly.
For TDC I lined up the OT mark on the flywheel centered in the observation hole, then inserted a 100mm bolt in the hole near the left side injector to lock it in place.

Using that tester, the HES plate should be rotated CCW until the LED just goes OFF. The HES hold-down screws should be just about centered in the slots on the HES plate.
I would not suspect the Motronic if the spark is there and the fuel pump runs for 2 seconds when the ignition is turned to RUN.
The upper Hall device provides spark timing and the lower one provides fuel injector timing. The voltage for the Hall devices is developed in the Motronic.

I checked the compression 150 each side.
It now wants to start it will catch just not stay running.

150psi should be OK.
Check the TPS connector at the left throttle body. Did you get it back on fully?

Mick,
I had not disconnected the TPS; should I have? Is there a test I missed?
I think I am to the point were I bring the bike to the shop. Not I do not mind to going. The guys there are great, just like to do it myself.
I need to have it up and running soon. I am moving to Germany :german in the fall and I want it to be operational when it gets loaded into the shipping crate.

You have to disconnect the TPS to set the voltage. Pins 1&4 on the TPS connector. :/

Please let me know when you find out what is keeping your bike from starting. I think I have the same problem on my 2000 R11RTP with 79000 miles. Had the HES replaced by nonBMW shop. It ran afterward and ran well, but it cut out on me again going down the road at 65 mph. Bummer.

I will let you know. It will be going to the shop this week.

Are you sure you have good fuel pressure? That sounds kinda like a disconnected fuel line in the tank, or a split fuel filter. If you pull a fuel line off of an injector and turn the key on, you should get LOTS of fuel (1/4 cup) when the pump cycles.

I will check those out. I replaced the fuel filter 1k miles ago. Maybe something worked itself loose.
Thanks

Jim,
post #2 above should have covered that. :blush

You are right but I will try it again.

I know, but it REALLY sounds like a fuel line issue.

So I cracked the tank and found the down stream side of the filter off. So it was loose. Reconnected. Got much better fuel flow from the lines going into the injectors, but the injectors are not blowing fuel at all. I suspect the Motronic unit has gone kaput.
I will run more tests on Sunday. Tried to get it into the shop, but still no times are available.
