Does anyone have any words of advice or trip ideas ?
Using the search function (http://www.bmwmoa.org/forum/search.php?searchid=691970) and your thread title resulted in 39 posts for you to sort through. Try a couple other variations and you will find others.
The trip is a good one with some great riding and sights to see. Two pieces of advice are to watch for animals and pay attention to gas. It is easily available but if you are used to 24 hour gas stations you may find yourself out of luck.
Have fun!

A great trip. I took the route through Duluth ( Stop at Aerostitch factory for the tour, very nice people). Great views along Mn. Hwy 61 then up to Thunder Bay. We stayed in Thunder Bay and took in some sights. Was still day light at 11:00pm in June. Then on to Sault Ste Marie. Spend some time in the Sault. Pretty area and view the locks. One thing I didn't see but still hope to is the Great Lakes Shipwreck Mus. in Whitefish Point Mi. We didn't see any moose but keep your eyes open for animals. We did have one trucker in Canada that was in a big hurry tailgating us otherwise not a lot of traffic. Ride safe:brow Kevin

Beasts to wary of-- porcupines, skunks, turkey, bear, and of course deer. Speaking from experience we just were in the U.P. to bring our daughter the last of her etcs. for college. From the animals listed above this time we did not see any bear, however the porcpines are quite numerous.
Sound like a Zoo up there ,we will watch out for the furry things. We enjoy eating at all the bakeries as each town has its own special rolls .

I am leaving to circle the lake on 9/5. Did it 4 years ago so will try to vary the route this time. We will leave from Minneapolis and make Copper Harbor the first day. Then to Sault Ste Marie. Next stop Terrace Bay and then on to Tower, MN.
Escanaba to Sault is pretty along the north shore of Lake Michigan. The stretch from Sault to Wawa is beautiful. Not much lake for sometime after that. Hwy 61 in MN is very pretty. If you have time take Hwy 1 from Silver Bay to Ely. Great road , very narrow and twisty. We use a rule of never eating at chains and found some great local restaurants. There is a great breakfast place in Thunder Bay. It is a scandanavian lodge of some sort. I am sure if you ask, a local can guide you to it.
Have fun, it is a great ride.

Pastys and Pie!!!
We got back from the Lake Superior trip. Everything went well-great weather, nice motels, good food and beautiful scenery. The 1150 GS did its thing perfectly and the wife had a good time. We covered 100 to over 300 miles a day.
Thanks for all of the advice that you shared with me.
