I am in the preplan mode of a trip to Alaska next year and am looking for a GS model for this riding season and the trip next year. Is there any advantage of going with the Adventure model over the standard 1150GS? I am looking for a pre owned 2002-2004. I anticipate selling this bike when I return from Alaska and then settle into an RT. Any opinions would be appreciated.

If you're going to Alaska, the big tank alone might be worth the money, but the crash bars and lower final drive would be helpful as well.

i agree for the reasons mentioned....I feel the extra range and protection offered would be well worth it for this undertaking as would the gearing difference between the 2. I have an 1150 and while I would not hesitate to take it anywhere, as is (it does about 46-50 mpg)...the extra margin of of safety is worth it. Also, it has about 2" more ground clearance and a stiffer suspension. The down side for me was that saddle was about 35" from the ground and a bit high for me while the regular 1150 sits at about 32"-33" and felt right. Any offroad, and you have to be aware of the weight of the bike and gear so foot reach needs to be factored, I've had mine on paved, dirt & gravel road/trail trave and it's been a dependable, fun ridel..Hope this helps...

I agree with the others on the Adventure, although the standard GS would certainly handle the trip just fine, you can't beat that larger tank. A couple words of caution however, because of the extra travel the Adventure affords, you need to be on the tall side or very long legged to adequately handle it. Also, I found the Adventure seat to be less comfortable than the standard GS, which is not that great either. I went with a custom (Bill Mayer Saddle) on my standard GS. either way you go, it is a great motorcycle and you may not want to get rid of it. IMHO the GS wins hands down over an RT.

I want to thank all of you for our input. The only issue I am having now is picking out what bike to purchase. The used GS market is VERY available I believe due to the 1200 being released. Thanks again for your opinions!

I agree with GIZMO. The GS is a big time KEEPER. For roads in my area it can't be beat. Curvy roads(goobs af clearance) gravel or dirt to a point, or touring. I'll hopefully know more after July, about tank size after my trip to Hyder Alaska. I get a little over 200 miles on my 1150 GS if I stay on two lane or dirt roads.

Let us know what you end up with. My vote is for the Adventure. I recently got 320 miles on a tank of gas from LA to Seattle. Plus the crash bars make great leg rests on the freeway.
