Does anyone know if it requires a special tool to change the rear tire on the 1100RT. I have been told that it can damage the wheel if this is not done?

No special tools, unless you consider a big-ass wrench and a 16mm (17mm?) socket "special." The bolts need to be torqued to 75 ft-lb when you put it back on. I go 50, then 75 in a crisscross pattern.

Thanks for the info.

actually, it sounds like the only "special tool" you need might be this: http://www.amazon.com/Clymer-R1200c-1993-2005-Motorcycle-Repair/dp/1599690403/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1219427522&sr=8-4

You will need an adapter if you want to balance the tire\wheel. I got mine from Dennis Kirk http://www.denniskirk.com/jsp/tpl/product.jsp?store=Main&catId=418&leafCatId=41811&skuId=282315&productId=p282315&mmyId=
