View Full Version : What are those small speedo marks for?

Looking at the post below, Island's photo of the speedo reminded me that I have always wondered what the small marks on the speedo are for. As an example, you can clearly see them in his photo on both sides of the 80 MPH mark. Are they shift points? RPM references? Don't stay in this range cautions? What are those little buggers? :scratch KC

Ya' know, I've wondered that myself.

And all this time I thought that was just "the Groove"...

Those are the K bike happy zones. Keep the needle between the marks and your
splines will never fail, your center stand won't collapse, the fuel pump vibration
damper wont turn into silly putty and the speedo will never fail. If you EVER ride
at any other speed, all bets are off.

C'mon, somebody must know the (REAL) answer......

Well, I found the answer.....

A UK member of the K11 Owners Group states that they are calibration marks that are used when the speedometer is connected to a signal generator. That way the accuracy of the speedo is checked and verified.

Apparently the UK police force has the speedometers on their bikes calibrated by an independent company.

Just passing along someone else's knowledge. Thanks, Chopper.

For the public, I agree. But I guess that after BMW produces police bikes another company fixes the speedometers for legal accuracy.

I'll say they are max RPM points for each gear. I know at redline in 4th gear, my K-bike was indicating just above the last two marks. It was just as fast in 4th as it was in 5th. :( (this was on a closed course, enroute to Beatty, NV from Scotties Castle. I used to ride to DV with a bunch of LEO's and Firemen. They brought all their Harleys and radar guns.) ;)

Somewhere I also heard the calibration mark story.
I have also heard that in many countries the inaccuracy is mandated by law, that is the speedo is required to show faster than the actual speed.
But then again I've heard one rather famous US manufacturer does this to make the rider feel better.........
