I have a 2000 RT and the clutch switch is bad. I took the fairing apart and traced the wire back to the harness and jumpered the wire and the bike will start so I have concluded the switch is bad. I want to replace the switch, but I can't figure out how to get it our of the handle bar assembly the nut is recessed in the housing. The Clymer manual says unscrew the nut, but I can't figure out how to get to it.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance for your help

Randy

On my 96 RT I cut the wires close to the switch then pulled the plastic cover off it exposing the plastic nut so I could unscrew it.

You could also try cuttinng off the plastic cover to expose the nut. Or just grab the whole assembly with pliers.

It is usually easier to access the swiitch if you remove the clutch handle assembley from the handlebar.

Cut the wire (you've already done that)
You can slip a deep socket down into the hole the switch is screwed into.
When putting the new one in, you can use a set of long nosed needle nose pliers to snug it up. You can't really get it very tight, but mine has been fine for 30,000 miles.

I got it done, it was a pain getting it out and also a pain getting the new switch started into the threaded hold

Thanks for the help.

As a side note my neutral light which had been intermittent had gone completely out. I attributed it to the neutral switch on the transmission which apparently is a common problem. I had stuff so far apart to get the wire for the clutch switch back in its original place, that I went a little deeper and got to the instrument cluster. When I went to remove the neutral bulb it fell inside the cluster. I fished it out and plugged it securely in, and Viola, I have a neutral light again.

Thanks again for the responses
