View Full Version : Wrenching a R1100R

I'm gonna try a few mods on my own and need to pull the tank off my 2000 R1100R first. Can anyone tell me how it's done and give me some tips? Are there alread fuel disconnects on my bike?

The R1150R manual tells you how to do it ... basically fuel line, one big bolt, one wiring harness (pump), and disconnect the oil coolers ... a lot of work to get to the battery !

You probably don't have quick disconnects there, so you'll need to look for the connectors that are right above the right hand throttle body. I think they're put together with those funky crimp on connectors BMW uses, though I think I've replaced ours with some stainless jobbies I bought at NAPA for $.50 a pop.

If it's anything like the RS, there'll be a big ol' hex head bolt on the right side that holds the tank down. That'll need to come out. It should be back there, above the throttle bodies. There may be one on the left side as well.

There's a big connector that hooks up to the fuel pump and stuff which should be pretty evident once you start to lift the tank up too. I think the one on the RS and on my S were big round connectors.

It's not hard, you just need to watch what you're doing.

Thanks, I'll check into it.

Believe it or not I can see the battery under the seat without even moving the tank on my R1100R.

I had to disconnect the lines on the roadster I had. It was easy to get the tank off, I would install quick connects, and reverse the "polarity" of them if you know what I mean. The next time you have to take the tank off, it will be much easier.

I can get the battery out of my RS without moving the tank, no sweat.

Just a couple weeks ago I had to pull my tank off and change out the fuel filter...what a pain. I have a R1100RS and that big allen bolt on the right side when you loosen it watch out for the Nut that is on the other end of it it's just loose, I think there was also a spacer right in there. I didn't have a lot of gas/water in my tank but it is a good idea when you pull the gas lines loose to have something handy to dump it in. I had gotten water in my tank from riding thru a couple of states in less than Ideal weather and I found out that little hole in my recessed gas cap was plugged up allowing water to trickle down inside the tank. With 50000 miles on the bike I thought it be a good idea to change my filter out as well as remove the water.
I didn't thing of it but quick connectors for the fuel lines would have been smart.:dunno

I took off the tank today. I did not have the quick disconnects handy so I just stuffed a screwdriver in the fuel line and tightened the hose clamp. But, I still got gas all over my arm.

I was surprised to see so much space under the tank. As I understand it the non-ABS Roadster uses a smaller battery. It must be a lot smaller cuz it lookes like there is room for two batteries under there.

First mission was to install a tapped throttle housing for a tension screw. I tried and tried again to get the pins out of the connector for my heated grips. I finally gave up and just cut the wires. It was simple to slice, solder and shrink wrap them when I was done.

While under there I installed the fused power cord that came with my battery tender. I know there is a BMW accessory outlet already on the bike but is down near my foot. That is just no good for use with a heated vest. I made up a cord with the battery tender plug on one side and an in-line BMW accessory outlet on the other. Now I can just plug that in and feed it up to my tank bag when it gets cool.

I also ordered a machined replacement for the paralever arm but it hasn't come in yet. I saw one last weekend and it looked so much better than the stamped piece. Heck, the cast one on the R100 looked better than that!
