'02 R1150RS Gear Indicator

The indicator on the panel with the gas guage and oil temp indicator does not show neutral or the actual gear in use. It shows 1, 3 and 5. It does not show neutral, 2 and 4. The neutral light works on the panel works. Any suggestions regarding cause and solution?

Hi memarshall:

The gear position indicator gets 3 bit binary output from the transmission.(1996 R1100RS)

I'm guessing your newer bike is similar and you've have lost bit0 somewhere.

If I'm right the following will be true.
Actual gear > Indicated gear
0 > 1
1 > 1
2 > 3
3 > 3
4 > 5
5 > 5

Hopefully the RID and transmission switches are OK and there is a broken wire somewhere between them or a corroded pin on the RID connector.

I figgerred all this out while adding a nice big bright 7 segment LED display on my 1996 R1100RS 'cause I can barely see the RID one.

Tracking down the fault may be a Winter job.
