Taking a trip thru Michigan the first week in July. Have gotten some advice from the LT board and have tentatively planned the following route in the UP. Unfortunately, can only spend about two days up there. Just wondering if I am making any major mistakes, or missing any "must sees" with the following route. Will be going up from St. Louis area thru Wisconsin to spend the first night in Iron Mt.

Day One--Iron Mt. to Silver City via US-2/State 64, and on to Copper Harbor via 64/38/41.

Day Two--Copper Harbor to Paradise via 41/94/28/123.

Any advice appreciated. Thanks.

You can't see everything in MI in just two days, The route you have planned is scenic and will make a nice ride, You can spend a complete day just getting a taste of Mackinac Island.

You might want to skip the guided tour of downtown detroit though.

That's Cliffy's neck of the woods send him a PM maybe he will play tour guide

No offense to anyone that lives there but I have to agree, Detroit does not make my top 10 list of favorite cities. It doesn't make the top 10 of Michigan.....

You just have to stop in my home town of Traverse City. This is great place to visit.

Take the Mackinac bridge down to the lower state, and hwy 131. Stop in Alanson at the Dutch oven bakery. WOW Good stuff!!!
Then down to Charlevoix.

In the Uppy you must see the ship wreck museum at White Fish bay,and try the smoked lake trout you can get close to there. It's fantastic!!!!
Have fun!

Definitely avoid Detroit, it just plain sucks having to drive through. It's like riding on a dirt trail because of all the grooves from the heavy trucks. Careful up on Big Mac, though it was fine when I went over it, I have heard some folks complaining about wind and such whipping up off the water. Also be sure to get some wicked fresh fish when you're in the area, it's some good stuff.

If not already said; it's a 4 lane (unless construction blocks 1+), outer 2 are "cheese grating", inner 2 solid concrete. Cheese grating scares hell out of me, it's an irrational fear; seems front end wants to go AnyWhere but straight. Beautiful views: up, over, & down, pending weather & attention requirements. The UP on US2 is as good as advertised. If you got the time, 2 thumbs up...

Is the "Say yup to the UP" sign still up there?

Just returned from the Michigan trip, 2,237 miles. Saw a lot of great scenery, even if most of it was in the rain. For the record, the metal grate is in the middle lanes of the Mackinaw Bridge. Did spend a night in Traverse City at the Park Shore on the harbor. Nice city, cherry festival and all. Thanks for all the advice.
