I just bought a new 2004 Boxercup Replika, I have approx. 200 miles on it and my hands are going numb after 5 to 10 miles.I put 60+ miles on this past Friday and my hands were so numb that I am glad I didn't have any quick braking situations. I also own a few Ducati's and don't really experience this sensation on them.I mean my hands are totally numb. I bought the BMW for a more relaxed and easier ride compared to the Duc's, they are great for 60 to 70 mile blasts but for a more intense type of ride. The last Bmw that I had was a '76
R90S back in 76 and don't remember this numbing effect, but that
was almost 30 years ago.
Has anyone had any experiences like this? Can anyone suggest a different type of grip possibly that could cure this problem. If not, anyone want to buy a low milage Boxercup Replika.

I've owned several BMW's over the last 20 years, and they all made my
hands buzz and then go numb. Spongier handgrips helped a lot, but are better used on a touring model. I am a firm believer in a throttle lock, or some such device, which allows you to release the grip on the throttle from time to time. I generally have found that 10 seconds of shaking some blood into the hand helps a lot. I do not think you should dump your boxer over this, rather look for gel-filled gloves, even padded half gloves will improve your circulation. Stick with BMWs, they are beautiful in their design and execution. Now I sound like an addict - not true, I have also owned harleys and hondas, yamahas and suzukis over the last 30 years. Beemers are simply the best

I'm not familiar enough with the Replika to know what type of bars it has but if possible, try to change the angle your wrists are at when riding. I've always had to fiddle with my bikes to get it right.

Andy,

Bar-end weights might help. The ones from Hudson Valley Motorsports Parts got a good write-up in the Motorcycle Consumer News. Since weights for BMW Oilheads are included, no, you're not the only one!

The Replika has an agressive riding position ... however the $10 plastic throttle boss is cheap and helps a lot ... other than that you'll have to raise your bars ... there's a Euro Kit out there also.

The engine will smooth out as you ride it. It won't be really broken in under 10k miles. I have 5k on a '04 motor and it is getting smoother as I put on the miles.

I agree with Popeye. I'm on my third boxer and the best way to handle this is with a combination of a padded gel glove, throttle rocker for about $7, and Throttlemeister control for about $129. And they do get smoother with miles.:p

They definitely get smoother. Our RS, with 65K miles, is very, very smooth, but Tina's R, with <9K is still kind of buzzy sometimes.

I had the same problem on my 2000 R1100RS I bought used with 24,500 miles on it. I went to pick up my wife on the bike so she could ride back with me and pick up our car I left at the dealer. It only took a few minutes and my hands were numb. I got back to the dealer just as he was closing and told the dealer about the numbnest and the fact I still had 280 miles to get back to my home in Nebraska. He was very nice and gave me a throttle rocker which helped out alot. I still went ahead and bought the trottle miester throttle lock and that makes a great bik difference

This is very interesting. I recently rode friends brand new R1150R & it buzzed quite a bit. Then my wife reminded me that I had complained about the buzz on my bike (04’ GS Adventure) when it was new. I can attest to the vibration going away with time & miles.

I also just had my 6,000 mike service done & I think the valve adjustment & throttle body sync way have helped as well. Someone with more experience will have to verify if that will/can help.

At only 2K miles, my R12GS is noticeably smoother than when it was brand new.
