Front fork oil change question

Just changed the fron fork oil on our new to us R 100RT and there is a bit of fine metalic particles in the old oil. I didnt notice this when I did the R 80 which is an 86 while the rt is a 94 so was wondering.??
Also we are going to change the fork springs are the dampners in the bottom usually needed or just replace the springs through the top and good to go?

If it was my bike, I'd go ahead and pull the fork legs apart, one at a time, and look for the cause. It's a good time to clean the sludge out of the bottom anyway, and replace the seals while you're at it.
