I ride an '04 1150RT with 10,200 miles on it. It recently began knocking just as I give it the gas when shifting into overdrive. I'm a bit perplexed because I've always use 93 octane gas, the rpm's are at a minimum of 4,000 (@ 60MPH) before I shift, and it doesn't knock in any other gear.
The beemer dealer ruled out valve adjustments and suggested I try a fuel additive by Yamaha called "ring free." Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Steve

Well you might get a better answer if you post it on the right forum this is for airheads not oilheads.

Maybe not. They don't work on them over at the oilheads like we do at the airheads.. ;>)

Is this a pinging or a knocking? Pinging sounds more like a small chain in tin can being shaken and can probably be eliminated with higher octane fuel. Knocking is often oil temperature/pressure related or worn parts needing adjustment/replacement. I find my R1100RT and my son-in-law's R1200C tend to knock when first started or when the oil is real hot. We put in thicker oil and that reduced the high temp knock. I first thought is was a rod but we rode over 3000 miles and does not seem to be a serious issue. I have heard it may have something to do with the timing chain tensioner???
