RealOEM check says it's a US-spec R100R. I suppose somebody in St. Louis might have put together an RS of sorts. Looks like it was based off a GS to me, but then what do I know? Mine's 15 years older ...

The bike without the fairing is a R100R

Why would it have the old style air box and valve covers?
That engine has to be from around 1979.
And why would they decide to use a robot skull for the gauges?

The seller is calling it an R100RS R. Looks like a regular R100R with a RS fairing added to it. Interesting that the fairing has the pinstripes but the bike does not.
The egg shell valve covers were standard on the R100R.

The R100R & Mystic were derived from the GS. Basically the same bike, but with less ground clearance and a K75 front-end. The R and Mystic each had their own unique cockpit (the R's was the 'robot skull' this bike has).
If this is the same auction I've seen linked in other fora, I don't buy the part about it being some sort of exercise on BMW's part. I think this is a one-ff that somebody made at home. And I too wonder about that airbox.

According to the VIN in the eBay listing it's actually a 1983 R100R when looked up on motoverse.com ( http://www.motoverse.com/tools/vin/bmw.asp )

If you aren't a died-in-the-wool historian, its and interesting looking custom bike, no matter who made it. It sort of looks like one of those R100R bikes that had the word "boxer" imaged onto the side of the tank, in large letters (same K-front end too). The faring does look odd.

You mean 1993.
So, he had a 1993 R with a bad engine and combined it with an old RS.
Big deal.

That's kind of what it looks like. Could be an interesting bike if the conversion was done correctly, but the pricing seems a little overly-optimistic.

I would tend to agree, especially since I noticed the early front lower grille.

I asked him for the engine number.
Nothing yet.

What makes you say it's an early grill? It looks the same as my 1988 that came from the factory that way. I don't know the years, but I thought BMW switched back and forth between the solid and vented center piece before deciding that the engine electrics needed the extra cooling of the vents. AFAIK, all monoshock RS models (1988+) came from the factory with the vented center front lower.

What a (great) Ebay deal!
A Frankenbike at a collectible price!
You don't suppose the speedo/odo has been replaced/altered as well?
it is funny how there are people who will pay these sort of prices for pretty pix + hype, but dis anything local they can see and feel.
Soon we should expect to see a prettier RS Frankenbike, at a commensurately higher price.
Might be a good bike - but price needs to reflect what it is!

Well, he posted the engine number info on the page, so check it out.
And looking at my 1981, it does seem that an old airbox would still fit on a newer engine.

To me that bike looks like an R100R Mystic with an RS fairing put on. I will say who ever did the work did a good job. :brow Kevin

I thought once they switched from the first one (full-width vents), they stayed switched. My bad ... or BMW's. I mighta' known they'd use up 10-year-old leftover parts. :rolleyes

Not a Mystik, just a normal R100R. But it does look like a nice conversion. I wonder what handlebars were used. I'm having a tough time with the same conversion.
