Going on a tip from a friend, I found a 1982 R65LS today chained to a tree. its been outside for several years and is rough to say the least. lots of service rust, and the Corbin seat is ruined. but its pretty much all there. IMHO its restoreable. it shows 14k on the clock. lady says she has a clear title for it. its located at the intersection of Rt 301 & RT 521 in Sardinia, S.C. just a few miles off I-95. I'm pretty sure this bike could be had for a few hundred bucks. if you want more info e-mail me at snapgadget@ftc-i.net or call me at 843-389-7752 ( home ) or 843-373-0656 ( cell ) just thought someone might be interested. its a little more work than I'm willing to take on. Kenny...

Somebody should go for this - it is a post 1980. I am 3000 miles away, or i would myself (if title is indeed in hand, of course!)

Caveat Emptor: Bikes like this (outside, exposed, years, rusted) are a "pig-in-a-poke". The worst thing you can do to any machine, including an R65. While the acquisition cost might be in the "few hundred" range, the rehab cost will easily add $2-3K (that's two to three THOUSAND) onto that. Leaving you with an R65 that will likely exceed the going rate for acquisition of a working example in decent shape. Good luck.

Yes, but if the bike could be had for few hundred, it's still a good buy. The bike could be parted out for at least that if it's in too bad of shape for restoration.

quite a few of the unique bits for the LSs are unobtainable. also dont forget that lots of R65 stuff is unique to them vs the larger bikes. beware the cost of 'restoration'
$.02 from someone that did a partial resto on an LS a few years back
:drink
pic for fun. gotta love pushrod seal weep :laugh

and your book begins,
"There she was, tied to a tree with a chain. Wilbur made sure that it would be there when he returned, problem was, he never did. That poor ol bike sat there, year after year waiting. Once a proud machine of the highway, now a home to several woodland creatures. The conversations with the chipmunk and mouse kept her going in the cold winter months, and each spring a new family of spiders would leave their home under the seat.
Then one day, this strange man arrived in an old van and he began to untie her...."

...ok, I'll take her as long as the current owner has clear title and $400.00 to go along with it. That should cover my gas to get her home, a couple months Comcast fees to scan and bid on ebay for vaporparts and leave me with just $3500 more to spend to get her into pristine, $2800 condition. :huh
Seriously, if anyone knows of someone in the middle of a restoration of another R65LS, might be worth it. Otherwise, er...I'd better avoid. I am in the middle of the 'if it cost a nickel to crap, I'd have to throw up' mode.

Damnit. If only the bike and I were closer together and/or I had the time to go get it. I really have no "use" for an R65 since I already have an R80 and an R100GSPD... but I hate seeing them sit like that. Makes me sad.

Too many bikes are getting chopped up. This will be a fun little bike for someone. they aren't making any more of these, you know.
Get the filthy stuff done thru September (tankllining, plastic repair, fluids) - then bring it in the kitchen for a winter project.

Was that an original LS color? I always saw them in that orange-red color.
My plain R65 came in the silber-beige metallic shown in your pic. Classy color!
