I called for a price on a room for the rally and was told the cheapest room was $250 a night. Any suggestion on someplace else to stay. My wife is coming and I'd like some place nice, about halve the price and still close to the rally.

Paul, I call that theft!!! I'd hate to see the regular price.
So what if the leaves are changing. The Adirondacks aren't even remotely close to the Dolomites in scenery and riding experience, yet I can get one hell of a room with breakfast and dinner for $75 in the Dolomites.
I can't figure out the high price of accomodations in North America considering that operating costs here are practically nothing in comparison.

Well then you ought to come up here to experience GREED. I buy all my motorcycle and car parts in the US to save serious coin.
Accomodations for some reason are a different matter; equal up here and down there, and in both cases...overpriced!!! I'll spend my vacation dollars overseas.

The location has nothing to do with it. But for some reason, someone in the Adirondacks thinks the changing of the colors warrants some rediculous accomodations pricing. Its a good thing they don't think the Dolomites are so special where I overnight or I might be paying ten grand a night.
At $250 a night, that place should not hold their breath waiting for me. :laugh

Hi GlobalRider :wave. Went out and saw the Grand Canyon and a bunch of the Southwest in 'February 07. Went down to the Everglades last January. Alaska in "06. Rant
Wow! What a reaction I'm seeing here from some, oddly enough when I saw this event and the one in Spartanburg in this months ON, my first thought was "kool I should post about these on the forum since I think its a great idea and its just what folks have been asking for and wondering why MOA doesn't do more regional events". Well here are two in keeping with the call for such from the membership and yet what happens??? the very first post in the colors of the "Gillette is going be terrible cause its going to be hot, its too far..etc etc" threads. I don't get it, people ask for stuff such as regional events and then (some) reject it when it comes along! ?????
As for the prices, well since when have sky resort areas been inexpensive???
For me I was excited by this, its a great area for riding been thru it myself, fall colors should be pretty good this year, the event itself is free (and you know what they say about BMW owners) what’s not to like?
I would have gone had it not fallen on the same weekend as our clubs local event and the fact I got another cruise coming up soon so don’t have the extra time to take a few more days off to go.
If this sort of reaction becomes the standard, how long do you think the folks that put these together will bother??

You do realize that the prices are set by the market, right? The owners know that they can charge that much and that their customers will pay it. While you may not see the appeal of traveling through there (let's ignore the costs of even getting to the dolomites), others clearly want to. As to the costs of running a business there, I won't pretend to know.

I take it we're still talking about room rates based on the originator's post. ;)
"Where" doesn't really matter. I thought it might have been where Paul lives since he mentioned the price in his post. The originator's post references the Colors in the Catskills rally event promoted within the pages of the ON and on this web site. CTrod, who entitled this thread Colors in the Catskills, stated that he "called for a price on a room for the rally and was told the cheapest room was $250 a night." Any reasonable person could clearly deduce that his inference applied to lodging in proximity to this specific Catskills Mountains event.
Paul, (who does live near the Adirondack Mountains) stated that he too called, in reference to rally accommodation, a person mentioned in the Owners News article and "found she was on vacation until Friday". Paul received no quote, but did comment that "$250 didn't sound like a discounted room to him". As with post no. 1, we can clearly deduce that his inference applies to lodging in proximity to this specific Catskills Mountains event. Why would Paul, seeking to attend a rally in Hunter, NY seek lodging nearly 80 miles away from where the rally will be held? That makes no sense to me.
That's my only beef with your comments. Otherwise, yes, I agree that $250 might be a tad steep, but for the Northeast, during Autumn colors? New England has us beat by a mile.

I guess you and a few others are having trouble keeping up.
I'm comparing operating costs here (lower) and there (much higher), yet accomodations here are far more expensive, whereas there, they're far cheaper.
That never made sense to me. It seems the rates are inversely proportional to operating costs.
If this was anywhere else, all of you would be whining about a $250 room rate. Now who is biased?

Alex, please keep mind most of your arguement I agree with you.
Stat, I'm not arguing anything. I'm just amazed at the prices some pay for accomodations on this side of the pond.
The people that started arguing were the ones taking it personal...the my back yard is better than your back yard. This wasn't about back yards, but thats all they saw due to tunnel vision. Anyway, it'll be an absolute-zero day in hell before I donate $250 for any room...and that is the discounted rate??? :laugh

...and while my prof says Gold Bar, WA - I'm from NY and still own property in Warren County. I know all about the "Economics" of the Catskill/Adirondack Region(s).
In the interior if you aren't working for the County... Well... I'll just leave it at that.

It's not the locals that are asking it. This is a high end Hotel/Spa with international time shares. There are other Hotel Spa's in the area that cater to a very exclusive clientele, rooms as high as $2,500 per night. This is the future for this area.
There are lots of rooms available in town if you want to support the locals.

You're still stuck on the Dolomites and missing the connection....and that connection is (drum roll)...they have great roads (and I won't say better, in fear of hurting fragile feelings) that they could just as easily capitalize on them by asking rediculous room rates, but they don't, and that is on top of higher operating costs.
So some place in nowhere Catskills is asking how much for a room? Get the point?

I would call these some pretty nice discounts, especially considering what some people paid for a far lesser room just recently in a state far to the west of the Catskills. =8^( Not only are the rates discounted for the first night, but you get an additional discount if you stay a second night! Get a couple of friends together and you can have a great place to stay for just about what a night at the KOA would cost you.

hey michael - will there be any open dirt-bike riding on those ski slopes, or is it all demo rides/skills courses, etc.?
i'd really like to do some dirt bike riding with my new set of wheels for the HP2. the combination of skills-training-only riding opportunities combined with a $170 fee in spartanburg has me wondering whether it would be more fun to go up to NY for your event.

Hello Ian,
Right now the on slope riding will be limited to skills classes only. These classes will be run by Team MAX with help from some well known instructors. There will be a small fee involved...a very small fee compared to the fees at spartenburg. We are still laying out the details, but it looks to be about a 7-8 mile loop up the ski mountain, across a fire service trail, down into the valley on the west side of the mountain and transiting back to the start point. The initial climb up the ski trail will be about an 1100 foot elevation gain before the fun really begins.
If you want to free ride the mountain, there are mountain bike rentals available with a chair lift ride to the top and only your self preservation instincts to limit your trip to the bottom. =8^0
Does that get your attention?
There will also be demonstration rides on the ski slope directly behind the main base lodge of the full range and capabilities of the BMW off road machines. We are also working to see if we can incorporate some trials riding (not trail, but trials riding) as part of the event.
Then there is the full range of sport, sport touring and touring opportunities available in addition to the vendors, seminars and socializing.
Did I mention that it's a FREE event?

Max puts on great GS events so I can't wait. :bow
I can't wait to see the Oktoberfest attendees checking out the BMW bikes and a few KTM's.
That call will ultimately be up to Team MAX after they decide how knarly they want to ramp up the amperage of the event. They might offer different training levels with different tire requirements. Not quite sure yet.

It looks like we're in the same boat; it will be my first rally of the year, as well. I have been on a few rides, done a small amount of camping, and I just got back from a rather short ride to Chicago and back (with a few days enjoying the city)... but this year has been a hard one for me - not nearly enough riding or rallying. I'm going to make this one count. :)

i appreciate this effort, here's a little input for future events.
it would be great to have to tracks/trails laid out for people who don't need training and just want to go riding. (realizing that one can always go find their own trails.... :ha )
i wound up coughing up the $170 for the enduro course in spartanburg (cough, cough) even though i know the the course is a little basic for me, just so i could ride my bike. oh well, everyone can always use a little skills brush up.
i had wanted to bring my street wheels for the hp2, too... but another $170 to ride on the track? :brow

Hello Ian,
The on slope riding will be limited to instructional rides ....for at least this year to start. We will have a number of dual purpose off road rides in the area on some county maintained dirt roads to keep people busy. MAX hasn't finalized the course cost yet, but for the cost of the Spartanburg course you could probably sign up for every course MAX will be offering over the three days.... and still have some change left over for a good beer time in the evening.
While we don't have a road track available, we are putting together arrangement for people to participate in the Lee Parks Total Control Class at a venue not too far from Hunter. Spend a day doing the Lee Parks class, come to Hunter and spend the night and then go riding on the local "black diamond" roads the following day. Sounds like a plan to me. Lee Parks will cost some money, but the "black diamond" roads are FREE!

Back in the early 70's I wanted an Alpina 350 so bad it hurt. I thought it was the most beautiful Enduro (remember Enduro bikes?) ever built,
the alpina was a combination of bultaco's enduro (matador) and trials (sherpa T) models.
it was considered a light-enduro, best suited for trail riding. it was a very well-done bike... i restored one about 10 years ago, but sold it to another collector (ran out of room in the garage and learned that i wasn't very good at restoration).
and to keep the thread at least remotely on topic... hugh's bultaco (http://www.bultaco.com/) in craryville, ny is not far from hunter mountain.
hugh bought out the inventory of failing bultaco dealers and is super-committed to the marque's preservation.
a visit to his shop is well worth the time.

Back in the early 80's when I started working for Connecticut Suzuki (now CT Power and Sport) they had just sold all their Bultaco stuff to a guy in Agawam Mass. who was collecting Bultaco parts. I wonder if that inventory later went to Hugh's?
While we are hijacking, but to get back on track, sort of. (only my best english on the forum). Do you remember Ossa motorcycles? Bultaco's Spanish competitor. The connection is the short lived Yankee 500 Twingle motorcycle made with 2 Ossa 250 cylinders mated to a hybrid twin/single crankcase and built in......

Well, I have the "Bead BraKr" (sp?) and I've used to to change tires on my R80 before, but I really didn't enjoy the experience. Honestly, I just don't trust my own work. I have issues getting the bead to seat.. or at least trusting that it's properly seated. One was fine, the other was not quite right, the tube slipped a bit, and I had to replace it (paid someone else do to the work on the repair due to scheduling).

i can change the tires on my R80G/SPD+ with just plain tar arns. no tire machine... right there on the ground.
no way on the HP or 1150, you have to have some way to break the bead and grip the rims. i think i have that bead breakr, too... and have not had much success with it.

It's worked really well for me, but again, just on Airhead rims. Made things terribly simple. I know a guy that uses it to change TKC80's on an '89GS without problems.

Ok - here's the most recent rundown.
The Kaatskill Mountain Club has almost booked out. We blocked rooms for BMWMOA/MAXBMW event and ran out of those at the lower prices.
I just contacted my wife..the GM and had her load up more at the discounted rate.
Studios without kitchens - queen bed and sofa bed - $150 per night....only eight left.
Studios with kitchen - queen bed or queen murphy bed plus sofa bed - $175 per night - blocked 12 more but they'll go fast.
Here's some additional lodging options that will definitely be cheaper than staying right on the slopes. All are within a few miles ride of Hunter on 23A.
Villa Vosilla - 518-589-5060
Mt. View Lodge - 518-263-4422
Fairlawn Inn - 518-263-5025
Hunter Inn - 518-263-3777 (not sure if they're opening yet for the weekend but call anyway)
BIG NEWS!!! Just slated an AMA Trials Event to take place over the same weekend. This event usually takes place at a smaller ski area in the Catskills but decided to move up to Hunter for better exposure this year. They're expecting about 40 participants including three or four pro riders.
It's gonna be a great weekend.
I'm headed out to the Watkins Glen Event tomorrow with some posters and flyers about the Colors in the Catskills festival. We'll see you all there.

OK - here's the rundown for you all.
Kaatskill Mountain Club (518-263-5580) is 10 rooms away from being sold out. Rooms still exist at $150 - $175 per night. The old addage is - you get what you pay for. http://www.kaatskillmtnclub.com/Index.aspx
At the KMC it's convenience and great rooms right on the slope. Take my word - the rooms are really nice. The Kaatskill Mountain Club also books privately owned condominiums at Liftside Village and Trailside at Hunter - and if you want to go big - book one of two condominiums offered right over the base lodge at The Pinnacle....one two bedroom sleeps 6 and one three bedroom - sleeps 8. Here's a link to some pics http://www.kaatskillmtnclub.com/ViewPhotoGallery.aspx?PageID=101&NavID=1
Camping - North South Lake campgrounds are open till October 25th. I camp here often even though it's only several miles from my house....because the grounds are amazing and the hiking is great. Several overlooks with 150 + mile landscape views are just a short walk into the woods away. Lies just about 8 miles from the festival grounds. Easy ride off Rt 23A. $20 per night per site gets you in. Here's the link for Camp Info and Reservations:
http://reserveamerica.com/camping/North_South_Lake_Campground/r/campgroundDetails.do?contractCode=NY&parkId=5&topTabIndex=CampingSpot
Lodging - many other lodging options for all budgets exist - here's the one's closet to the event. All are 518 area codes.
Forester - 263- 3777
Mountain View - 263-4433
Villa Vosilla - 589-5060
Scribner Hollow - 263-4211
Fairlawn Inn - 263-5025
Mountain Brook - 589-6740
Washington Irving - 589-5560
Hunter Inn - 263-3777 (call to see if they're opened for that weekend)
Here's a link to all lodging on the Hunter side of the mountain.

Rob,
Are you free to ride to the summit by yourself, or is signing up with Max a requirement? Do you have specific times this will take place (1pm, 3pm, 5pm...)?
Thanks!
As it stands now the summit rides will be part of the training. If we have enough staff we may be taking addition groups to the summit.
We will be having four sessions on Saturday and one on Sunday. We will probably start at 8:30 on Saturday.
There will be no "open" riding on the hill.
Best,
Rob Nye

7 spots remain for the Lee Parks Advance riding clinics.
Plenty of room left to camp, plenty of rooms in the area.

There is NO camping on site at Hunter. The camping at North/South Lake is very nice and there are plenty of spots. This campground is one of the few state campgrounds that stays open after Labor Day, mostly for the hunting crowd. There is nothing in season the weekend of the Colors event so the place should be fairly empty except for our crowd. You can reserve a spot in advance or just show up at the gate.

I think you will find the grounds will be crowded during the day since it is also Oktoberfest at Hunter Mountain. But the crowds leave in the evening and then the place is ours.
During the day you will want to explore the Catskills or
find a bargain at the motorcycle vendors
get some lunch/dinner at thefood vendors
have a beer
ride the lift
taking pictures
Either way you win. Crowds are what make for a GREAT rally. :dance

North-South Lake is the biggest and most popular state campground in the Catskill Forest Preserve, offering extraordinary scenic beauty, and historical sites, such as: Alligator Rock, Kaaterskill Falls, and the former site of the Catskill Mountain House. An abrupt change in elevation occurs from about 540 feet above sea level at the base of the escarpment to approximately 2,250 feet at the site of the former Catskill Mountain House. The provinces around the lakes have long provided visitors with exceptional views of the surrounding countryside. It is said that on a clear day, five states can be viewed from the escarpment.

I thought that since Mike, Paul, Rob and Max have been sooooo cooperative and helpful with this event - that Hunter Mountain should give back a little.
I have been riding in the area for three years and have some favorite roads and businesses in Greene County. Since we're working closely with Greene County Tourism on this event as well.....I had an idea.
I'm going to put together a scavenger hunt type of ride. I'll work with Friedle on the route if he'll assist. The idea is to stop at between 5 and 10 businesses (not yet determined) to pick up 5 to 10 questions and/or clues about Hunter Mountain and the surroundings. Bring those questions and clues back on Saturday night and ponder the answers over a few cold ones. I'll collect them that night or Sunday morning and announce the winner at high noon on Sunday.
Working on the prizes today....stay tuned!

Nice find Curt. This is going to be one heck of a rally, a party, an event - whatever it is!It sure is. Can't wait. I was out riding in the dirt in Vermont last Sunday with Ben and Steve from Max's and it whet my appetite to learn more about off-road riding, so it will be me and my X-Challenge next weekend.

I might actually meet some of you guys this time....
Depending on where you are coming from you might want to go through Woodstock. Take Route 212 through Shady and Willow out to Phoenicia. (Sweet Sues for Breakfast is awesome lunch and dinner too. Then take route 214 up to Hunter Tannersville.
I know some other really great leaf peepin rides through the Catskills to get to Hunter if you are interested....

Hi Paul,
The entire area is familiar to me and I continue to map routes in my head. There are many great 1 hour fun rides around this area. You could pick any of the towns on the outskirts of the Catskill Park area and map a route up through to Hunter and not be disappointed.
I was referring to the different routes one could take from Woodstock as it is the gateway to the Catskills. The Woodstock Film Festival is also happening this weekend so its going to be jumping with celebs.
Depending on how much back road scenery you want there are a few different routes. Some are more twisty than others :brad I see that you posted what looks like a shot from the Platt Clove road on the way to Hunter.... as well as the Woodstock Wizard. The Platt Clove road is stunning, closed from December to May. You have to get off your bike along the way to feast on the vistas.
You could also go through the center of town up Rock City road to the 4 way intersection. Go straight through intersection on to Meads Mountain road. That will take you up to the Zen Monastery. Here there is a hiking trail up Overlook Mountain. ( no bikes allowed :( ) But, its a great hike to vistas that over look the Hudson valley and North to the rest of the Catskill Mountains. The road then takes you down the back side of Meads Mountain ( great peeping) to Mc Daniel Road where you take a left. This connects you back up on route 212 where you take a right and go for about 10 miles. At a 4 way intersection you take another right onto Old State Road 28 or go straight to Route 28 ( Not recommended). This will bring you to Phoenicia where you can then take route 214 ( recommended )or Route 28 to route 42 to Hunter...
These are routes coming from East or South of the Catskill park.
From the North ( NYS Thruway) Getting off at one of the Catskill exits to Route 32 which is also fantastic.

Hey Chris! I'll be starting out from Roxbury and heading East around midday Friday. Would you be amenable to leading some rides around Greene and Ulster counties at some point over the weekend? Platt Cove road is amazing as you describe (curious, but is it possible to take Mink Hollow road from Elka Park down to 212?). Took a nice zip up and down route 214 last week. Great fall weather :D
Totally looking forward to meeting you this weekend! :thumb

Hi Jonathan,
I would be honored... I am more accustomed to Ulster county. Perhaps a road trip around the Ashokan Reservoir?
I don't think they've connected the two ends of Mink Hollow road. That road however has inspired songs by great musicans of the area.
I never found you guys during the last Rally in Rhinebeck. I parked with the crowd at the Aerodrome and watched the show then went sailing. Missed out on the camp activities.
I am planning to make it up to the rally early Saturday.

You are talking about the Hunter Ski lodge? I stayed there with my wife last winter for a weekend getaway.... it was $300 a night and a little touristy for my tastes but it was certainly fun. It is a bit expensive up in these parts but its all because of demand. A most beautiful backyard to NYC and NJ.

Since you'll all be riding around Greene County this weekend. I wanted to give you the chance to win some prizes for your effort.
They'll be clues/questions at each of these businesses - just stop by and pick them up - bring them back, ponder the answer over a beer and hand them to me on Saturday night or Sunday morning. In the event of a tie - winners will be tossed in a hat and drawn by an honest member of the BMWMOA.
The winner will have the gathered the most questions with the most correct answers and gets to choose either the first place or second place prize.
First Place receives a mid-week seasons pass at Hunter Mountain complete with deeply discounted weekend tickets.
Second Place will receive two nights lodging in a one-bedroom condo at the 2009 Color in the Catskills festival.
Third Place gets four lift tickets good for any day of the 2008/2009 winter season.
Here's the names of the businesses - stop by starting on Friday morning.
1. Traphagens Honey - Route 23A - just west of rt 296 - outside the village of Hunter.
2. Beth's Cafe - Route 23 - Prattsville
3. Catskill Mountain Country Store - Route 23 - Main Street - Windham
4. Guaranteed Irish - Route 145 - East Durham
5. Greene County Tourism Info Center - Route 23B - Leeds (just off exit 21 of the NY Thruway)
6. Catskill Historic Point Museum - end of Main Street & Hudson River - Catskill
7. Story Farms Produce Stand - Intersection of 23A and Rt 32 - Catskill
8. Twilight General Store - the fork of North/South Lake Road - Haines Falls
9. Astor House - Route 23A - Tannersville
10. The Baselodge Bar - Hunter Mountain Ski Resort
This makes for a really great ride. Leave Hunter travel west down 23A to Prattsville - catch back up with 23 towards Windham - head up Mitchell Hollow Road in Windham to County Route 10 - make right and travel down into East Durham area - meander down to Leeds - across to Catskill - and back up 23 towards Hunter. If you're headed down to the riding school or just riding around - your're sure to cross paths with each of these businesses on the course.
Who's up for the challenge?
