In the process of learning how to work on my inherited airhead. The bike in question is a 1975 R90/6. My dad put Dellorto carbs on which have become finicky, I decided to have the original Bings rebuilt and stick them on due to perception of increased fuel mileage as well as the Dells getting wonky. Anyway, I have my shiny Bings back from Bing agency, ready to go on. I'm guessing that the choke cables and probably throttle cables have been altered to work on the Dells as I seem to remember my dad telling me they were shortened to accomodate when the Dells were installed.
This is probably a stupid question, but when one orders new choke and throttle cables, do they come in a generic length and are shortened to fit, or do they come in a specific OE length? Just wondering if when I order new choke cables ( did already - cheap enough ) if they will need modification or they will be an easy install. Maybe new throttle cables would be in order as well.
Thanks for any info. Sorry if this is too basic of a question. Carbs are kind of foreign to me, I'm used to working on vehicles to an extent but typically work on my FI cars, so carbs are a little out of my experience range, kind of like a foreign language.

the cables are gonna be OEM fit to length depending on what handle bars you have. The second item 01 is for "high bars", you know, like Americans in 1975.
01 32731236612 accelerator bowden cable (L=1007MM) BUY 2 $16.68
01 32731236613 accelerator bowden cable (L=1096MM) BUY 2 $17.11
02 32731236644 hex nut BUY 2 $2.18

Ok, thanks, makes sense, and that's what I figured. I'll eyeball the cables that are on the bike now, which are probably OE modified to work with the DellOrtos. Guessing I'll have to replace them to get the Bings back on and working properly, but I'll have time to get a closer eye on things Friday.

What are you going to do with the Dells. Some people really like them, you might be able to get a pretty penny for them on e-bay or this market place. Reserach wht they are woth beofre listing them.

I'll probably ask around before selling them. Actually, I think my dad bought them new 5 years ago or so and put them on the bike. I never had a problem with them until I messed around with the choke cables one day and they never seemed to run right again. I fixed the cables properly into the choke lever again, but apparently not right as one of the carbs seems to make the left cylinder run funny. I'm sure it is something I did as the bike ran fine previously on the Dells, I just got frustrated with messing with them, and I had already been mulling going back to Bings as I have heard that the mileage is a little better, and that the CVs perform better on trips where your altitude varies. Don't know if this is gospel or not. The Dells are probably merely an adjustment away from being 100% for the person who is a carb guru, which I am not. I just kind of like the OE look of the Bings on my bike anyway, another reason I had them rebuilt.
Someone will get some nice DellOrtos. Good to know they are worth something after what the Bings cost to have redone. Maybe I'll recoup some of the cost.

Yeah, the Dellorto's should be worth a bit, they are considered a performance upgrade by the cafe crowd... They are excellent carbs. But I understand your desire to use the Bing CV's for your reasons stated.
The CV's, like the old SU side draft carbs on cars (Jaguar, Volvo etc) use air velocity to raise the needle, so they are not affected by atmospheric pressure. I.e. at altitude, there is less mass to the air, so there is less vacuum generated, so needles don't pull up as much (as throttle-actuated needles would have), so there is not an over-fueled rich condition. Good choice for mountain riding and general touring.

putting dellortos carbs [model #?] on instead of bings is not necessarily a straight swap, so you may not find you can just put the bings back on
you will need to check
size/type of the intake spigots
air tubes
if the throttle cam was changed to the 90s dellorto specific one [iirc more teeth/different profile for the heavier slide pull]
you will also probably need new fuel hose, as the Bings route differently, and definitely new cables for your model bing and handlebars.
hope that helps
