Hi

4 of us rode our R1200GS's from Florida to Inuvik and we are on the way back.

Problem, when we changed tires today in Whitehorse YT, we found that all 4 bikes are through to the metal on the rear outer brake pad. (20,000 miles total, and they were Ok when we left Florida at 14,000 miles).

We should be able to get replacements when we get to Edmonton AB on Friday (Argyll Motorrad)

Questions: are there any special tools needed to change the rear pads? Are there any tips I need to know??

Thanks

Roger

Opps - didn't see that that my wife had logged in to the forum, nevermind, it counts as her first post

And.... I forgot to mention that they are 3 x 2007 R1200GS and 1 x 2007 R1200GSA

Looks pretty straightforward. Just need something to drive the retaining pin out and it mentions removing the sprayguard first - 3 screws.
Have a good trip home, looking great from the pics.

Here's the text from the RepROM;

Removing rear brake pads
Press the brake caliper against the brake disc in order to force the pistons back.

Remove retainer (2).

Drive retaining pin (1) out toward the wheel side.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Attention
Once the brake calipers or brake pads have been removed, operating a brake lever could result in the pistons being pushed out.

Do not operate the brakes.
Install the brake pads and brake caliper or insert the piston resetting device.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Remove brake pads.

Installing rear brake pads
Check that spring (1) is correctly seated and installed right way round.

The engraved arrow points in the forward direction of travel.

Install the brake pads.

Insert retaining pin (1) by hand and drive it fully home.

Install retainer (2).

The instructions above are good.. but... on my '07 R12R, I found I had to remove the caliper before I could remove the pads. And there is no sprayguard on the rear caliper on my '07.. (Edit: unless by "sprayguard" - they mean the vestigial rear fender on the GS..)
Does the GS use a different caliper?

......and it mentions removing the sprayguard first - 3 screws.......

and that's another story.... On the Dempster, 2 of the bikes (my GSA being in of them) managed to catch the sprayguard on the knobs of the TKC80's, which snapped them off and jammed them up against the rear shock.

My wife's GS did the exact same thing last year on Dalton.

I'm not even going to replace them this year.

- Thanks for the advice on changing the pads !
