View Full Version : keeping the modding momentum -- remote brake reservoir

I'm preparing to put some lower bars on the cafe. there's no way the onboard reservoir is gonna work if the bars are tilted down like a set of clubmans... this is going to require a remote flud reservoir, perhaps even a non-stock pump too.
has anyone gone down this road? thoughts?
purists and "safety preachers" need not apply.

I've always positioned clip-ons to fit the hand – as opposed to accomodating a style.
Fortunately, that postion allows any stock 'unitized' master cylinder as used by BMW.
Have not used or installed "clubman's" – but if I did, they would be Tomaselli Condor adjustable clubman's:

GUZZINO (http://www.guzzino.com/tocoadba.html) sells them
With fixed bars that have a 'steep' angle, why not retrograde to a /7 type mc ?
The old undertank remote as used with the ATE system is less efficient, of course, and requires a gas tank with a tunnel to fit the mc ...
Brembo does market remote reservoir master cylinders:

YOYODYNE (http://www.yoyodyneti.com/Category.aspx?CategoryID=3006) sells them.
good luck.

Judging from the number of people around here who "upgrade" from an under -tank mount MC to a bar-mount there ought to be any number of unused ones available.

unused ? from a 31+ year old machine ? LOL ! good luck finding that !
(they are available new – @ $400.00,
and the 14mm intended for a single caliper system works BEST with a 2 caliper set-up)

vanzen - those are the bars that I am targeting. Raask makes a knockoff that's affordable and available. i'm looking for style and fit. :thumb
my biggest concern about doing this is all the switchgear, choke, etc thats integrated into the stock perch.
i had an undertank setup on my '79 and will not retrograde. i'd rather upgrade to something non-bmw that's modern and serviceable and affordable.

well ... I've used stock switchgear with aftermarket bars, clip-ons.
If the bars you get are 22mm and NOT 7/8" and chromed ...
the installation is easy.
I've had to reduce the diameter of 7/8" chrome bars (esp. right side throttle)
to fit stock perches – a REAL-PITA ! but can be done.
some just fit – a lot of variation in the diameter of the bars and esp. the chrome.
(I can tell by your bike that you are not afraid of a little 'custom' work ...)
and chose that option rather than messing with (ruining ?) the stock switchgear.

I found some used "BMW clubman" bars that I bought... ended up using them, but not as one would expect the clubman bars to be. Turns out they were K bars (I am told), and the center span was not enough to get the drop outside of the forks. I did the best we could with them and used straight BMW switchgear from the bike.
Actually quite comfortable, but more like mod'ed S bars than real clubmans....

Looks like K75C bars, the universal doner bar. Like your black 'Le Mans' stripe on tank and cap.

... looks like a set of K100RS bars I've got in the garage.
they are a popular swap onto R100RSs because they are narrow enough to fit behind the airhead RS fairing (narrower than airhead S bars), and taller than the stock flat bars.

hey this is some good info... appreciate it. the more I think about it, the more I might just ditch the oem switchgear on the right side. there are aftermarket kill switches and throttles and a starter button can easily be relocated into a hidden location under the saddle, etc. Heck one of those cool kill switches with a tether would be kinda neat.
the gears keep on 'a turnin. :dance

Fair enough....
There should be a fair number of no-longer-being-used under tank master cylinders available.
How's that?

LOL. They are seen in the MOA ads, IBMWR ads, and e-bay – on occassion.
Parts and complete assemblies are available new, and sources for 'sleeving' the bores are available when they wear or rust beyond use ...
IF you like the cable operated unit.
