Hello everyone,
I thought it may be a good idea to start this thread after reading several rally related comments on various other threads. The purpose here is to exchange information and try to answer questions related specifically to the MOA National Rally NEXT year 2009.
So here goes…I’ll start us off.
My name is Vance Harrelson and I have been asked to chair the 2009 rally. I am not sure what exactly qualifies me for this position but I promise to do my best. I live in Alabama and currently hold the office of Vice President of the BMW Motorcycle Owners of Alabama (MOA Charter #5). I will be graciously assisted by my wife Mari (unofficially) and Connie Reaves (AL Club Pres) officially as Co-Chair as well as the army of endless volunteers and committee chairs that is required to pull off an event like this.
Some may be familiar with the Chicken Rally hosted by the AL club each year on Memorial Day weekend and has grown to draw approximately 700 attendees for the past 20 years. Both Connie and I have been heavily involved in the production of this rally for a long time. To me, the national will be like the Chicken Rally only on steroids!
For those who are not aware, the 2009 rally will be held in upper East Tennessee at the Appalachian Fair http://www.bestofshoware.com/appalachianfair/ July 16-19, 2009. The fairground is located in Gray, TN very close to Johnson City. This happens to be one of my favorite parts of the country (yes, I am a bit biased) and offers some of the best riding in the Eastern US!
In the coming months there will be a lot of information available both here and on the MOA website and your ON magazine.
Will this rally be perfect? Probably not but please remember...your rally is only possible through the year long planning of the MOA staff and volunteers who give hours and hours of their time to make this party a reality. We will appreciate your patience as well as your suggestions to help make the end result one we can all be proud of. I can promise you that your Rally Chair, MOA staff and volunteers will do all we can to make this the best rally ever!
I hope you will make plans now to join us in Tennessee for a bit of that good ole
Mountain Magic...Southern Style !!
Now, it is your turn…any questions or comments?
Vance Harrelson

Is it too early to complain yet?
:hide
Hi Vance. I am sure I will have a wonderful time, like I have at the other Nationals. It looks to be in proximity to good roads, so if the hotel rooms and food vendors hold up (I wouldn't complain about either btw), some will only be able to complain about the weather.
Good Luck, I'm in! :wave

Vance, good luck! I'm excited that it will be so close to home next year. I'm sure I'll volunteer, but let me know if I can be of further help. I may even ride up this weekend to check things out. I'm sure everyone will enjoy some Southern Hospitality.:buds

Hello Vance and congrats on the huge undertaking!
My wife and I will be coming down from the north and we were wondering where the closest hotel to the rally site would be and if they are offering any rally discounts. My wife doesn't camp but she does ride her own BMW so she gets 1 thumbs up for that! We're both excited about the location of this rally and I am especially because now I have the greatest excuse to go and ride all the great roads of the Smokies. I went to the rally in Charleston, WV and I had a grin from ear to ear riding the back roads in the mountains. I know it's still way early for such questions but my wife and I are already schemeing and planning!

Well, as its been nearly 4 hours since the first post on this thread, and several weeks since the site was made known and given the popularity of this event and the location, they are probably already all booked! :laugh
OK, just kidding, but I would deffinately keep a close eye out for the info being released as I am quite sure they will fill up quickly once the hotels offering any discounts are anounced.

I don't know about the closest, but I just booked a room at the Super 8 near Kingsport, TN for $53.99 per night. It's about 13 miles north of the rally site. There is a Super 8 a little closer but it's full.

Having grown up in Tuscaloosa, it's good to see a home-boy in charge next year. :D
Can't wait to be walking among all the bikes, tents, and most importantly PEOPLE and thinking to myself that once again, I'm at the rally and for these few days, all is right with the world.

Gillette was my first rally and i am looking forward to next year in TN. coming from the east coast i imagine the nights in TN are humid so instead of camping next year i reserved a room at the Ramada Inn in Johnson City. my only suggestion after attending my first rally would be to have more food vendors on site. i am sure you will do a great job and i am looking forward to seeing some of the new friends i made in WY again next year.

It won't be as humid as you might think. East Tennessee is different from the rest of Tennessee because it is in the mountains. I live 60 miles away and when people visit from Richmond, Northern VA, etc., they think it is very cool on our hot days.

Thanks for the rally undertaking. My wife and I took our first ride to the area this spring. We started just south of Syracuse, NY to Asheville then Charleston, SC (by way of Greenville, SC/Touring Sport BMW after the RT died). We thoroughly enjoyed the area and are looking forward to next year.

The title being a play on a particular name brand, need I say more?
When I first heard of the 2009 Rally being in "Johnson City" Tennessee, my first thought was "oh that's amusing, another Johnson City. Being from Texas, I'm used to hearing about Johnson City, Texas, which is in the vicinity of Fredericksburg, Texas.
It is my understanding that one of the past Rally's was held in that area of Texas some time ago? I'm a somewhat more recent member of BMW, as I've only owned BMW's for about 16 months now, but have now attended two rallies. What a ride so far !
This is just a thought/idea for now, but I am wondering how many, if any, might be interested in some kind of Johnson City to Johnson City ride for next year's rally? Leaving on Sunday or Monday with a Wednesday arrival in JC Tennessee. Maybe not a group ride, but some sort of start and ending point from the two towns, with some sort of patch for the event?
I'm sort of adapting this from the "Hat Trick" of this year's rally for those who made all three rallies from South Dakota, Wyoming and Colorado.
Just input and ideas for now...
Thanks

I look forward to next year's rally and want to thank you for volunteering. I really appreciate it and hope it is a satisfying experience for you. I'll be coming and camping from Colorado and will probably do an East Coast ride while I'm at it. Thanks again Vance. Steve
:clap :clap :clap I went to the Charleston, WV rally and found all sorts of great roads and places to see on the way there and back. I am really looking forward to this one, having missed Gillette this year.
Anyone have pics of the fairgrounds? They do not have any photos posted on their website, except for the ferris wheel.
I noticed the fairgrounds has motocross arena events there. That would be interesting if it was going on at the same time. And they had BMW's, I mean Husqvarna's competing. :clap :clap :clap

Wow, that didn't take long!
I've been thru the area a few times and living on the eastern seaboard can attest to the fact that generally speaking there are a ton of smaller motels all along the eastern seaboard and mountains, some better than others, but finding some at those prices should be fairly easy. Sounds like making a reservation now, which you can always change alter if a better deal or location comes along, might be advisable. I expect this one will have a very high attendance, for reasons stated about population density in the mid eastern region, etc. I know I'll be looking at this weekend.

Location is 8 miles south of the site for $62.99 a night. We'll enjoy this MOA Rally!!

East Tennessee State University is in Johnson City. With the state of the economy, they might be interested in the extra income. I plan on bringing my travel trailer rather than commute (60 miles) or stay at my daughter's house in Kingsport (10 miles)

The Red Roof Inn is about 7-8 miles away from the rally site. Rooms are ~$50, but if you're an AMA member, it'll be less.

Hey vanmar27, I got a reservation at the Jameson yesterday, so sold out? I don't know about that.
Meanwhile, after my initial post, here, I saw that the 2009 Rally is at the Appalachian Fairgrounds. Assuming this is correct, using Garmin MapSource and its Find Nearest Places>Lodging>Hotels/Motels, I did this list; the nearest hotels are listed with address, phone and distance in miles to the Fairgrounds. I can say the first Super 8 told me they were sold out. There are more but they are further, yet.

Vance,
I was floored when I found out the 2009 rally was going to be in my home town. I hope I can be a help to you and the other members with some "inside information" I plan to start on some lists that will include great local places to eat and also locations of some of our local revenue producing speed traps. Please contact me and let me know how I can be of assistance in making the 2009 rally a wonderful event
Yes, I booked a room, because I was going to Gillette for my first MOA rally, and after picking up my pre-registration gear, got a return call from UAL about leaving based on a medical emergency at home. That worked out well, but for me the Gillette rally was a disaster I spent 2.5 hours at, and then, :bolt

Hotel reservations?! Blasphemy!!
After looking the site pictures over, I'm calling one of the spots along the trees for my tent! :D
Based on location, distance from a big percentage of members, and good riding right outside out door, I think this is going to be a popular one, indeed. I was sad to miss Gillette; I'm going to be sure not to miss this one! I'll jump on the volunteer bandwagon that Beemokat started; I'll volunteer to work rally registration first thing Thursday morning. I did this in WI and it was lots of fun!

Looking at what's available the Value Place does have a kitchen area which could be handy and is about at the lowest of the price (which is by the week, even though you don't need to book it for that long) and proximity is about as close as you can get. Can''t decide whether to motel it or camp, I like camping but in the midst of 6000 others ??? I like being able to get away from the crowds when I feel so inclined, so I got a room which I can cancel later if I feel like giving the camping a go, would they allow me to camp on one of the rooftops?? Looked for you in Gillette Barry but never saw you. Wondered about you though for sure!
Thanks Hank for the photos! I believe there will be ample area for the camping folks but as always the premium spots will go first and I suspect very quickly.
The last report I had from the Jameson was that they were sold out but they may have opened more rooms. The Mgr. there was "blown away" when folks were calling from Gillette to book! We had tried to warn these guys about the BMW "takeover" that was soon to take place...I think now they may be beginning to believe it!
Thanks everyone for the offer to volunteer! We are sure going to need the help. As usual there will be upcoming information on how to sign up for that. I do expect this rally to set a record for attendance and that will mean more help will be needed than ever before. For the many that have volunteered in the past, you know what a rewarding experience it is. For those who haven't, I urge you to pick a job from the many available and sign up! The volunteer spirit is what makes this whole party so much fun! (How's that for recruiting early?) :clap
As I said for the rooms before..call around there are many options available in the surrounding area.

Beer Tent opens on the Wednesday afternoon and we keep cranking till closing time Saturday. Get in early? Volunteer for the Wednesday night shift-you will be surprised by the attendance that night. After pulling a 4 hour shift the night before the Rally starts, you really get in the Rally Groove quickly!:dance
When you work at the beer tent, you see everybody at the rally.

Bob, you might need to bring a translator. I went to school with a fellow from Jersey and another from the Bronx. With my southern hillbilly drawl (southern has more than one accent), we needed a translator. In this area, fire sounds like far, tire sounds like tar, ain't is proper english and I'm considered a Yankee because I live in Virginia.

Hi Ken,
I don't need no stinkin' translator! I know that each letter is a syllable down there. :laugh

Three of us who live in the area and plan on mapping out some of our favorite rides (road numbers, miles, etc.) and send them in. We ride the mountains of Virginia, Ashe county in NC and the Shady Valley/Mountain City area of Tennessee all the time. We don't know the road numbers or exact distances. We know how long it takes to get to a good place for lunch and an alternate route to return home. Most of our rides are 150-225 miles long but there are good shortcuts on almost all of them and we plan on making the rides multiple distances with the shortcuts included.
We have a copy of the Johnson City (I think) Chamber of Commerce "a 12 Pack To Go" suggestions for a dozen rides but they appear to be more like suggested Sunday family car rides and they don't give any distances or road numbers. We plan on contacting them to see if they have more detailed directions and if so, we'll give them a try and check them out.

I was born in this area 60 years ago and it is most unusual to have a warm night. It was 46 degrees when I got up this morning (60 miles away). The weather around here is moderate the year round. That is why halfbacks are buying property around here (halfbacks are people that moved from the north to Florida, didn't like the storms/weather/high insurance/ethnic mix, etc and moved halfway back). Natural disasters are very rare with flooding the main one (but if you live on one of our thousands of hills, that is not a problem)

I'm looking forward to attending, and losing my Canadian accent for the week. I promise to stop saying Eh, and start using y'all.
For those of the Southern persuasion, I am not a Yankee, even if I sound like one.
(Canadians did previously venture south into Washington and burn the Presidential Mansion, however the RCMP took away our matches and told us to behave when we travel, so we will).:doh
In addition we developed a northern accent so we could blend in with our neighbours to south. We haven't lost our spelling differences however).
Looking forward to attending, and volunteering at the rally.

The Red Roof Inn is about 7-8 miles away from the rally site. Rooms are ~$50, but if you're an AMA member, it'll be less.
I did some checking and found most motels wouldnt reserve that far out. I also found out that at that same time there is going to be Little league World Series playoffs. We all know what that means! I was able to get Comfort Inn in Johnson City to work with me on making some reservations. I have "blocked" 18 rooms in my name. 12 with 2 queen beds, 6 with 1 King and a sofa sleeper. All non smoking at a rate of 79$ a night. Less any discounts like AMA. If anyone would like to get one or more of these rooms contact me at 1-601-466-1651 (cell) if no ans leave message I will get back. This is great. My wife was born in Johnson city and her family is now on Knoxville.
So it looks like I may attend.
It will rain at night. We were in Knoxville the last week in July this year and it pretty much rained every night. Humidity is higher than Kansas City, and that is saying a lot!
Lots of nice riding roads. Good GS roads around Joyce Kilmer forest (near the Dragon). Maybe I'll have to rent a GS or trade in my RT.

The hundred miles between Johnson City and Knoxville must make a lot of difference. My daughter lives about 10-15 miles from Gray and her grass turned brown in July due to the lack of rain. I live 60 miles on the other side and would love to have had the rain.

If you like true southern mountain country cooking near the Blue Ridge parkway, I have two. The very best and the cheapest is on Rt 52, about 5 miles from the Parkway in Cana, Virginia. You simply get on south Rt 52 at Fancy Gap, VA and ride down the mountain until you get to the Hungry Farmer on the left just before you get to the NC line and Mount Airy. The second best place (but more expensive) is Shatley Springs on Rt 16 near West Jefferson, NC. It is about a dozen miles off the Parkway.
Partners BBQ is in Bluff City on Bristol Highwaynear Johnson City if you want a good BBQ near the Rally.

Just got back from Friendship, IN and was impressed by the great selection of 2 lane roads available in TN, IN, & NC. Friendship is the home of the NMLRA so I used my cage for the trip as I've not figured out a way of transporting rifles and ammo using my bike. I will be retracing my trip in Sept riding my CLC and camping out as I go. The high 50's at night and low 80's during the day is so much better in IN than the 90deg/90% humidity here in N FL that there is no comparison, plus there is great scenery, real hills, and twisting back roads everywhere. The rally next year in TN seems far away now but I'm sure that planning the routes to/from Gray, TN will provide me hours of enjoyment. Hope to meet many of you there. Ride Safe :usa

lovely road gets up to around 6000 feet as you cross the top of the Smokies. I think it was about an hour or two from Gatlinburg to Cheerokee with some nice twisty parts and at one end the road does a full 360 deg loop, when I saw the sign I did a double take, it shows the road going in a full circle!wtf??? turns out you go thru a tunnel, then the road starts to turn to the left thru a full 360 deg. as it climbs the side of the mountains and brings you back to a point right above the tunnel and several hundred feet higher and you continue in the same direction. I got a pic of the sign but its on my system at home. I'll have to post it later. you should do that road.

Committees will be established and Chairs for them starting in Oct. Once that is done, I expect those folks will be glad to take names! There are a whole bunch of committees and it takes time to establish all that. Watch here and or your other favorite MOA places (website, ON) for the list of committees and then contact the chair for the ones you want to help.

What is the chance of MOA Club #67 (National R90S Sport Owners Club) being able to an area set aside to hold an R90S Rally near the Vintage Display? Our first rally was in 2000 and we have held a rally every year except for 2008. We would need an area for approx. 30-40 bikes. Any help of information you can give us would be much appreciated.

Hey Folks, I am currently trying to plot my route from western AR to the ralley site. I was curious about HWY 441 through the Great Smokey Mountains Park. How long is that route and what is the ride like? Thank you.
Kelly
I just got back from this area. I rode over Hwy 441, Hwy 129 (the Dragon), and a really great road called the Foothills Parkway between Hwy 129 and Hwy 321. These are all very fun roads. Hwy 441 and the Foothills Parkway were particularly beautiful. Plus, they have less traffic and less law enforcement than Hwy 129.

We will be working on the physical layout of all the areas by year end. Our plan is to provide "club" areas and some of these areas may be able to have display room. Once that plan is established, I will let you know! Thanks!

After putting together several "state" rallies back in my HOG days, there are lots of "tips"..
the primary one.... DELEGATE... SOON, and OFTEN.
Keep a list of names, phones, skills and abuse capacity.
Have a few "team" meetings where you "walk through" the rally from setup to deposit refund.
Do it NOW.
Include your "local authorities" in the planning.. a simpler task if you find a Motor Cop to help encourage them.
Photo Ops for the "dignitaries".. oh, don't forget to invite them and their "photog".
Invite the local Fire Chiefs... and visit firestations and Emergency Responders... ask if they will put on a presentation at the rally...
Get "permits"..... now.
Water... pure, clean water....
Shade...
Food Vendors... (you can sell 'food tickets during the REGISTRATION or at the gate)... Let the vendors put up "tip jars"... or allow them to offer "extra" food or items like suntan lotion, babywipes, chapstick, etc... "For A FEE"
Sit down eating places (with shade if possible)...
Public "facilities"... there is a place who has full "bathroom" facilities in a portable trailer!!!! Those will cost a bit more, but they will "service" the unit between visitors and leave the place clean and dry. http://www.restroomtechnology.com/
http://www.mesawasteservices.com/restroom_trailer.php
and more...
Invite some "RV" dealers to put up some demo's... if they will contribute a couple for "Emergency areas" where the Emergency Responders can hang out...
Water... cool, clear clean water...
Invite a couple "bike transport" folks to have a booth there... there will be someone who can't ride home....
Start a "local support" telephone line for folks to call if they need assistance... it may take a couple of phone lines.... but it will help coordinate should folks get separated, etc... also would be a good "triage" point should the ER folks need to contact and counsel someone....
Ask "local riders" to provide their info for use by the Rally Officials, again, in case of mechanical or other support.. .(everyone is not in the Anonymous Book).
Water... cool, clear clean water...

I went to Gillette Rally and was totally impressed on how bad things were! 1/2 mile to the showers and long lines, Porta-pottys grouped together, so few food vender's, no shade, etc. and oh yea cold water for cups only NO containers to fill and take on your hot hot rides! Cathdeac is right on the money with his advice. As I read the previous posts I can't believe the MOA selected a site without the site planning and infrastructure requirements being done before the selection, as Vance indicated.

I strongly recommend-- at some point-- we consider the area around Brevard NC. Close to Asheville, and Hendersonville, with Pisgah and Caesars Head forests/parks right there. Clean, smooth roads with little traffic. Routes 11, 276, 215 make Deal's Gap seem "Ho-Hum". 215 crosses the BRP twice (I think) the run up C-Head is just fabulous! Top it off with a break at the top-- see if you can see the ocean from the top! Almost!!
A day's ride round trip to MT Mitchell, Cherokee, Lake Lure (where Dirty Dancing was filmed), Black MT. (RT 9-- Woo Hooo!) Visit Saluda, snatched right out of the Andy Griffith show, it could be the model for Mayberry. I swear I've heard Aunt Bea calling for Opie. Run 176 to Tryon out of Saluda-- drop 1600 feet in about 10 miles of switch back and curves that expand to two lanes (in case you get in a little too hot!) to the Side Street Restaurant for really-- really! good pizza. The train quit running last year but that was great when it would roll by, 10 ft from the building-- hang on to your beer!!
I could go on and on.
I know it's close to the previous rally but-- someday!!
If anyone just wants to go in a group or alone-- may I suggest Orchard Lake Campground (chalets and cabins available-- not a place for a loud drunken party though), or, Saluda MT Lodge. Saluda puts you in the middle of it. And the roads around it are so good, you may never get out of the area! The ride to Wards Grill for breakfast every morning is worth the trip!

215 crosses the BRP twice (I think)
Yep, I've done that.
Pick up 215 north of the Parkway and point your bike to the south. Ride up and over the ridge then down the other side. Turn around, point your bike north, and ride it in the opposite direction. You will cross the BRPW twice while riding the incredible NC state road 215.
Wozerd, I heard recently that the Western Carolina Ag Center, located on NC 280 just south of Asheville is planning to construct an enclosed, air conditioned arena. This might make the Ag center, in combination with the adjoining NC Mountain State Fairground a suitable venue for an MOA national.
Hey, we can hope.
When considering places to stay in the area you mention, don't neglect the Blue Ridge Motorcycle Campground, right on 276 (73 miles, as the crow flies, from Gray,TN). Lovely little campground with tent sites and cabins.

Has any consideration been given to the idea of having a shuttle bus service running between the hotels in the area and the main event so that those that are staying off-site could enjoy an evening at the beer tent but not have to worry about riding back to their hotels? I don't know if there are taxis in the area for the 2009 event or local bus service since its a pretty small community, but I might look into to that and see.

Great, I did see there is a local transit company in Johnson City and that they stop running the buses around 6:15 and have around 12 buses, so maybe a deal worked with them would be of interest as a means for them to increase their revenue for the hours after they normally close. I know I certainly would be willing to shell out a few bux for a one way ride from the city out the complex during evening hours to hang out at the beer tent, and I bet many others would be interested in such a service running thru the evening into what ever closing time at the tent. (assuming it closes, that is! :lol)
RM
here's a link I found for the local transit system, you probably already have it, but if not....
http://www.jcmpo.org/transit.htm
besides their regular routes they also handle "paratransit services for individuals with disabilities, and various demand-response call-in services" so seems like they might just be receptive to a deal.

Well ... see ... some of us who were at Charleston didn't think it worked so well at all.
The buses only ran to take the hotel people to the beer garden at night, not to take the campers to Rally Central during the day.
And then, when the buses DID run, they were overwhelmed with riders. Not enough shuttles, too many people.

I was just up that way and stopped at Grand View Park to shoot a few pic's of my airhead with the city in the background and took a nice pano shot as well. Neat view from up there.
My better half's brother used to have a place in New Orleans on one of the streets that the famous street car named Desire used to run on from which the movie got its name. I never even knew that there was such a street car til we visited him one time. I've always liked street cars, rode one in Frisco back in 57, and they had them in Europe when I lived there back in the dim past. I also discovered that the horse drawn trolleys used to be called an "omnibus" back in the civil war days according to my great, great, great grandfather's diaries that he wrote during his visits to DC and travels on the east coast, that I've been transcribing before the ink fades into oblivion....but I'm rambling now.....

Hi,
The Biltmore House is in Asheville, NC about 50 miles away (per MapSource) and to see it completely would take the better part of two days, absolutely stunning! Grandfather mountain is also near Asheville and it is a nice ride too! I don't know about the Knoxville Zoo but I like visiting different zoo's too. Check the dam release schedule and you can go white water rafting/floating etc. From going to Deals Gap area it seems that there are plenty of rafting places in the area. Check out the web for close by businesses. That takes care of three days.

In addition to Johnson City, look at Bristol VA/TN and Kingsport Tn. All three of the cities are close together and they are only a few minutes apart. I suggested Warrior's Path and Bays Mountain because they are good for younger children. Another thing that would interest children a great deal is Dollywood http://www.dollywood.com/ It is about 100 miles away but worth the trip if you are have kids. I took my kids there when it was Silver Dollar City (30+ years ago). They still talk about it.

Abingdon, VA, is about 50 min from Johnson City, TN. In addition to an art museum, there are several arts/crafts stores, The Barter Theater, and The Virginia Creeper Trail (Rails-To-Trails walking, bicycling and horseback riding trail). The trail goes 35 miles into the mountains across some wonderful wooden trestle bridges and trout streams to the NC line. There are several bike rental options, and the trail is do-able by a 6 year old, especially the part from Whitetop Mountain near the NC line to the town of Damascus, VA, 16-17 miles down a 3% grade on a well maintained cinder trail for a 1 1/2-2 hour ride.

Some folks have asked about RV accomodations at the fairground for the rally. According to Vance, there are approximately 22-30 sites with electric and sewer hookups (water?), about 10 with electric only and maybe space for 20 for dry camping. I'm not sure how level they are since level and East Tennessee are not usually used in the same sentence. Great mountain riding and level are not often found together.

The Rev'rend left out one very important thing: the chance to hang out with thousands of fellow BMW enthusiasts and make lots of new friends! The social aspect is my favourite part of the rally. In many cases, it's the only time I get to be face-to-face with many of my MOA friends.
Here's a hint- wanna meet lots of cool people at the rally? Volunteer to help one of the many committees. Most of them need a hand, and it's the volunteers that make the rally happen. In the process of performing your volunteer duties, you'll meet really cool new people and with any luck, you'll have new friends.
Volunteering is easy; you can raise your hand ahead of time by contacting a committee chair, or you can walk up to the volunteer-desk at the rally and ask them who needs help (there is always a last-minute need).
See you in JC! :wave

As the Reverend and Veg said. I also like to equate it to a family reunion with relatives you didn't know you had. Also, when people ask me what I'll be doing on my trip, I tell them that I'm going to hang out with several thousand of my closest friends.
Like Ben said, volunteers make it happen. A smile and a handshake go a long way at your first rally. After that, hugs and kisses are not unusual. It's all about hanging out, riding, visiting, meeting new and old friends, learning things, teaching things, and enjoying company and camaraderie. Telling stories. It's an event where you, your wife, and even kids can attend and feel safe and at ease, where we all watch out for each other.
Look for the Reverend and me in the beer tent, and Ben just about anywhere. I look forward to meeting up with you, and everybody else too.

In addition to the above it's alot about the ride. Getting to see new roads that you might otherwise never journey onto.

Yep, it's all about the people you will meet at a National. Good, dear friends that you see once a year, at a different location each time.:clap
I must also second what Ben and Randy said: when you go to a National Rally, do your bit and volunteer. It is a great way to meet new folks and you will feel more "connected" to the event. It is a volunteer-run gathering, and we need help to keep it running well. I know that Randy and I will be the Head Bartenders in TN, and we always need volunteers in the Beer Tent! :deal

Hi all,
I'm curious. I have never been to a motorcycle rally and am seriously considering going to the 09 MOA rally. However, I have to convince my wife that the trip is worth taking. If I knew the "inner workings" of a motorcycle rally, I'd be able to plead my case a bit better! What does one do at a rally? :ear
These guys are all dead on with their previous replies. The only thing I have to add is a personal invitation to the 09 rally from the rally chair. Tell your wife to try one...this one and I will bet you both will be hooked! As previously stated you will be amazed at the dedicated group of volunteers come together with a great MOA staff to put on a such a party! And the entire team has been at work for months putting the details together.
If you like BMW motorcycles....lots of 'em...twisty roads and great scenery...music...food and fun, you can't go wrong!
I hope to see you guys there! :clap

Hi all,
I'm curious. I have never been to a motorcycle rally and am seriously considering going to the 09 MOA rally. However, I have to convince my wife that the trip is worth taking. If I knew the "inner workings" of a motorcycle rally, I'd be able to plead my case a bit better! What does one do at a rally? :ear
First of all, one gets there via motorcycle; which is a major fun to have a GREAT trip to someplace new, and have a final destination where you have more to do than your typical tourist activities!
From there, if you are a camper, you get to ""play house" and set up your camp in an area of your choosing, meet your neighbors and make some new friends that way.
I did my first Rally two years ago after many years of riding a BMW, and found my #1 occupation was to look at the THOUSANDS of different bikes, awestruck would be the better term in terms of the huge variety of BMWs AND other brands that literally surround the camp area and the rally site. You meet more new friends that way, and each rally afterward, those same people you met previous are now your friends to get together with every year. New, Vintage and all between!
This year I volunteered at the national, and plan on doing it again. Once again, it was fun, met tons of people, and felt a huge sense of pride!
You get to ride from the rally site, great roads, and destinations await you! This year in Gillette, the great fishing, the Devils Tower, Mount Rushmore made up the balance of the great destinations to ride around the Rally. In TN, it's all new to me, which makes it even more exciting, because I have never been there before.
There are contests to enter, give always at vendor booths, TONS of motorcycle related stuff to look and some to buy, such a great mass of commercialism and humanity to wander through and see what is new in the motorcycle world; not everyone’s cup of tea, but fun for me!
Now on to food! GREAT coffee, great food vendors, great restaurants to ride to eat...I did not go hungry or for lack of options.
Last but not least, the classes, and activities, anything from how to change a tire to first aid.
If you’re single, I am sure there were many unattached women to meet and dance at night when the band played, but being a married man, I never noticed any...NOT!
Seriously, many people of every age from young to old, many couples, many old geezers like myself, and many others of both genders made for a lively Friday and Saturday night of great music and camaraderie!
Looking forward to my third National in Tennessee! Hope to see you there!

Well I am planning my trip already for next year. I will be heading out of Paris,AR north to Glacier National Park in Montana. There I will be meeting my Uncle who is riding down from Anchorage,AK. Then we are going to head east and try to end up at the rally site on Fri. I would love to hear some suggestions for my route from some of you battle tested road dogs. I will say that Mt.Rushmore will be along the route. Besides that I am open to pretty much anything. Feel free to send me an email with tips and hints. I am figuring on about two weeks of riding.

Thank you Vance for the great work you are already doing.
We are planning to attend the '09 Rally.
We may be a group of 8 to 10 from our hometown (Oaxaca, Mexico).
We want to take a day tour to a destillery of Tennesse Whiskey,
but as I've been searching in the web, Jack Daniels and George Dickel are too far.
Do you know of some destillery near Johnson City ?
Warm regards from South !!

Hello Ruben! Glad to know you are planning to make it. We are planning a great time and look forward to seeing you. As for the distillery tours, the most famous I suppose is Jack Daniels in Lynchburg, TN and it is a great tour and a very quaint little place. You are right though it is a good ride from the rally site itself approximately 300 miles one way. Considering that you might want to plan to visit either coming to rally or on the way back. It is worth a stop for sure.
I don't know of any distilleries close to the site (that are legal and available to tour anyway :) ) So the best I can offer at this point is catch 'em on the way up or back.
Lookin' forward gettin' a little Mountain Magic....Southern Style!

Good idea. It's 300 miles in the opposite direction of the Rally but you have a week to go a short way and the extra 600 miles makes for a better trip. The RA Rally was in Shelbyville, TN a few years ago and it included a tour of Jack Daniels. It was well worth it. The process of making whisky and the history of Jack himself was most interesting. We got a tour, lunch and a tasting. They wouldn't allow us to ride our bikes over but they made us ride a bus. They didn't want the problem of people getting a RIU (riding under the influence).

Welcome to Tennessee…the Volunteer State.
Thanks guys for your positive comments about volunteering, you going to make my job much easier. Vance has asked me to Chair the Volunteer Committee, our committee is in place and ready to process the volunteers pre-rally and at the rally with a Volunteer Central. Much more later from our Committee. Of course you can still volunteer directly with the Committee Chairs with your favorite area.

YB Big Johnson Tour
Yankee Beemers #153, Sled Dog Touring Team #323
The Yankee Beemers and the Sled Dog Touring Team invite you to join us for our rolling rally to the 2009 BMW MOA International Rally in Johnson City Tennessee. This is not a group ride. While all the logistics of campground reservations and routes will be covered, your journey from site to site along with your meals will be your own responsibility. Groups of up to four will be encouraged. Recommended routes will be provided along with data files for your GPS. This isn't a ride to meet the Federal Park Police on the Skyline Drive or dodge deer and tourists on the Blue Ridge Parkway, this is a ride that will focus on "small roads" that are not what one would consider the fastest or most direct route. As this is not a guided ride participants will be encouraged to check out maps around the campfire and plan their ride for the next day or simply follow the recommend route. If you like to sleep on the ground, cook meat on a fire, drink beer and perhaps enjoy a fine cigar after a day or incredible riding with like minded enthusiasts this is the tour for you. For more information visit the Yankee Beemers (www.yankeebeemers.org) or send a note to rob.nye@gmail.com.
Best,

If there was a downer in Gillette it was the food available onsite and surrounding area. Not the committees' fault if the rally site turns into boomtown and everyone is too busy to chase bucks for just a week. On the other hand this year maybe something different. Local restaurants and bbq caters maybe looking for a week of lines at meal times. More ribs and chopped pork please, and(none of that mustard type from the other part of the state thanx)

It is so easy for me to play armchair quarterback by expressing my extreme disappointment with the BBQ at Gillette. I stood in line twice and both times they ran out before my number came up. The poor vendor look frustrated, maybe had underestimated the number of customers he would have I don't know.
Thank goodness for the vendors inside near the main indoor pavilion that seemed to graciously serve up great Brats, great burgers and fries seemingly in endless supply, as well as the other guy right outside the doors that also somehow pretty well kept up with the herd of BMW people decending on his little cook trailer. I camped near another vendor in the far east campground who also toiled from dawn to dusk in serving up the best truck stop food a guy could want, but I found myself looking beyond fried food, and wishing I had at least one meal that contained fresh fruit and veggies and a mian course with a roll.. But I got to say it; I found myself wishing I had two things in Gillette; A Caribou Coffee Shop with big muffins for breakfast, open about 6:00 am, and some meat and potato and veggie type food for day and evening. We ate off the rally grounds a couple of times, but in comparison to Westbend, the food at the site got lost in translation with the vendors and planners somehow. I mean no disrespect, I fully enjoyed the Rally, and cudos for the planners; I got my monies worth!
I just feel that I (we) had money to give somebody, but the food, beyond fried food was simply not there.
I had suggested early on that if the BMWMOA was to sell tickets in Tennessee like now for a catered BBQ event for the Saturday night feed; BMWMOA could sell all the tickets they wanted, and find a caterer now that could know exactly how many cows to kill, how many pigs to BBQ early, how many ears of corn to bring!:thumb Has anybody else thought of how well this would work? Pre pay the vendor, he would be happy to show up with the correct quality and quantity!
Try to imagine if you knew we had a whole Rally Saturday night feed was a BBQ with all the servings, beans, cornbread, corn on the cob, would you not shuck out $20? $25.00 to have a ticket to that?
I would!
Then again, consider the source; I'm on a diet, I'm hungry, so I better stuff it here, go to the fridge and get another carrot:thumb

Red,
I'm not going to address the logistics of what you're suggesting since I tried that at the RA Rally I ran in Boise in 2006 and wouldn't ever do it again. BUT, during the Board meeting/site visit last October, we stumbled on a great BBQ place (rated best in the Tri-Cities area) just about five miles from the rally site just off the Interstate. He was approached about serving at the rally. When he asked how many folks we were expecting and I said "Up to 10,000", his eyes rolled back in his head. Then he said "I'd better server brisket - we can do a lot of that." I think some of the fun of this site is going to be finding all the good BBQ joints. :eat :eat

For the last couple of years I have been feeding any Military Veteran and family members for one night for free at the rally. All you have to do show up and have all the free brats and hotdogs just for serving in any military branch does not matter what country. The only thing I need is about how many people are going to show up. I will do this until the food runs out for that night

I think the concern about enough food might be misplaced. The Nascar Race in Bristol hosts 160,000 people twice a year and the dragway hosts events that has attendance figures in the 40,000 range for each event. I don't think food will be a problem as long as they know we're coming. Also, UT in Knoxville is about 100 miles away and I'm sure there are caters there that could handle our little crowd as their football attendance exceeds 100,000 and the rally is in the offseason.

The rally site food shortage, if there is one, generally seems to stem from the vendors not being aware that we stay over night. They may have done much larger crowds/events, but most of those folks go home for dinner- dinner is where we empty their trailers.

Maybe he didn't know the customer...
The first listing under "Specs" for a BMW rider is "Carnivore"! Each vendor should be aware of that as being one of the most basic characteristics of the creature. There should also be a "law" that BBQ vendors stay open until 1/2 hour after the music stops, and at all hours that beer is served.
...from one of the creatures.

Food! Food! Food!
Had a vendor meeting yesterday at the site with the local on site vendors Rotary, Kiwanis, etc. They will be providing all 3 meals and we have also contracted at least one other outside vendor for breakfast, lunch and dinner. If there is not enough food it will not be because we didn't try! The Food Vendor Chairman lives in Johnson City and is in tune with what is provided there as well as outside vendor availability. I am confident we have a grasp of what is needed to feed the group. We are planning for a good variety of food although it will be typical southern fair food to include hamburgers, hot dogs, pizza and the like. I even hear there will be some southern traditional stuff like pinto beans and cornbread. And be assured, just about anything you want is available close by the rally site. Oh yeah and did I mention good ole pork bar b que? Yep, that too is being planned. Really, I think it will be OK!
Come on down we'll have plenty of eats available!

Larry, for now, just plan to be there. All your questions will be answered as the event draws closer. Camping on site will be plentiful and is the best most fun way to experience the National Rallly. And all your basic needs will be avaliable on site. If you chose to motel, then you'd prolly better hurry and get a reservation, as rooms are likely filling fast. The area has lots of off site food avaliable, as well as the greatest riding experience you can imagine!:dance

Tennessee passed a law a few years ago that allows you to take and eat your own road kill.

I hear a lot of talk about a BBQ dinner, but myself being from North of the Mason-Dixon would like to go find some authentic-like hole-in-the-wall BBQ joints, The kind where you have trouble deciphering whether it is a BBQ restaurant or a scrap metal junkyark.
It would be awesome if ya'll locals down there would enlighten the rest of us that dont really know what the difference between hickory and mesquite are and let us in on some of your fav. BBQ joints.
Thanks

Based on my experience at the 2008 rally, it appeared to me that the placement of the shower trailers and outhouses were based on being convenient for the vendor setting up and taking down rather than the convenience of the rallygoers.
I was camped near the airhead tent which made for a long walk to the fifty or sixty outhouses along the roadway called Windmill Drive. I believe that these should have been spread out in groups of about six or so within the camping area.
The showers were located to the far end of the property requiring a long walk or medium length walk to ride on a bale of hay to get to. Why too weren't these broken up so as to be more convenient to the entire area?
According to the map the ratio of mens vs womens showers were 2-1 If correct this seems to be considerably different from actual Male/female attendance, This would suggest that either the mens showers are overcrowded or the womens showers are much underused, which would be wasteful of rally funds.
Perhaps this can be addressed at the coming rally.

Tennessee passed a law a few years ago that allows you to take and eat your own road kill.
Never had a chance to use the road kill law but this one gets used more often.
Tennessee's red light law
Tennessee also passed this law a few years ago. It comes in handy when the bike won't activate the sensor.
The law allows motorcycles to "run" a red light in TN after stopping.
T.C.A. 55-8-110
.......
.
.(b) Notwithstanding any provision of law to the contrary, the driver of a motorcycle approaching an intersection that is controlled by a traffic-control signal utilizing a vehicle detection device that is inoperative due to the size of the motorcycle shall come to a full and complete stop at the intersection and, after exercising due care as provided by law, may proceed with due caution when it is safe to do so. It is not a defense to a violation of § 55-8-109 that the driver of a motorcycle proceeded under the belief that a traffic-control signal utilized a vehicle detection device or was inoperative due to the size of the motorcycle when such signal did not utilize a vehicle detection device or that any such device was not in fact inoperative due to the size of the motorcycle

Hickory and mesquite are two different woods used in cooking, both loved for their aromatic smoke that imparts a nice flavour. Mesquite is a bit more western. Both are tasty.
The conventional wisdom that I think generally applies everywhere is this:
If the sign says BARBEQUE, keep driving.
If the sign says BAR-B-QUE, only stop if there are plenty of cars parked outside.
If the sign says BBQ, stop without any worry and prepare to eat to your heart's content. :eat :eat :eat
