View Full Version : Brett Farve - What the .... ? ? ?
A year and a half ago, Brett teased us by saying he might retire. "...Getting too OLD for this," he said. Then he went huntin' (said in a southern, relaxed tone) And golfin'. And after months of making us all wonder, he said he was coming back. HURRAY! the Green Bay fans said. There was wild, jubilant dancing in the streets.
And a year later, it was the same dance. Would he retire? Maybe yes - Maybe no. But eventually, it happened. It was a sad day in Wisconsin when he delivered his tearful farewell. Businesses had official days of mourning. Taverns hung out black wreaths. It was gloomy near the water-coolers in offices and factories.
And now, WHAT THE HECK? He's BACK! But is he back as a Packer? Today the scuttlebutt is that he might be traded to the (OMG!) Bears or the Vikings!
Like the old lady said in the commercial a few years ago ---> I need a martini!

I quit watching NFL when Montana and Young retired, and then started watching again, just to see Favre play.
But much of this unretirement story makes no sense to me whatsoever, although I haven't taken the time to research what is happening.

The GB front office wasted Favre by not spending money to sign key free agents and win when we had him. Favre got tired of not being heard by GB front office, how they snubbed his requests to sign different players. You got what some would consider the best QB to ever play and the GB front office goes about building for the future. All the GB front office is thinking about is financial performance and not winning. They lied about it. Told Favre one thing and the public something different. I do not blame Favre one bit for wanting to come back to another North division team to stick up the GB front office's......(you know where). I have been a Packer fan for just about 40 years. I can honestly say if Favre comes back for another team I will change my hat. A focused irritated Favre will do more damage to an opposing team than any QB out there (Brady had another good year, when he gets closer to 16 years we can talk). This is going to tear Packer nation apart. There very well could be a civil war at some point in WI because of how passionate people feel. This is huge and the GB front office really screwed up.

Personally - I am tired of the Diva...
Yes, he is an extraordinary player!
With an extraordinary attitude, and one that I am tired of.
The "front office" did not go on national TV crying about how sad they are about retirement!
Sorry - no understanding from this old fat man!

Awh... Schucks Folks....it's just professional football....it simply is about $$$, ego's and who will remember what about me when I am gone.....
Don't bother to get all tearie on my now.....even in GREAT Green Bay....nice city....too bad there is not enough other things to do in the winter....so that the Pack don't mean so much to so many good people....:blush

It doesn't bother me one bit. I stopped watching professional sports about ten years ago. I got tired of paying big bucks for food and drink knowing that many of the players (who earn more than most of in one year than we make in a lifetime) bitch and moan about the way things are. Personally, I think the best thing for professional sports is for them to go bankrupt, but that's another story.
Also, I'd rather spend a Sunday afternoon on a ride versus being planted in front of the TV.

My hero John Elway was NOT of CBS, FOX NBC ABS...football commentary type a guy, and I'm so glad he left with grace. I was always sad to see Joe Montana go to Kansas City long after he should of gone home or climb some other ladder in the 49s club..
I think Bret also flunked the TV announcer test, so HE'S BACK!!:blush
Denver tried out Tony Dorset for a year, and that went south, so I really hope Bret gets ahold of this thing and bows out with his dignity...

Okay, maybe, but one of the best (offensive) football games I ever saw was the Monday night KC/Denver game where Montana and Elway traded touchdowns over and over... I wasn't a fan of either team, and neither team had much going for them then... but it was incredible to see two of the best quarterbacks (ever?) lead their teams by sheer will. I don't even remember who won, I just remember the performances. It was truly an epic performance.
If the Packers think it's time for the team to move on, they should. As a football fan, I'd love to see Favre go help a team rebuild, and watch an old guy teach some young dogs new tricks. Miami comes to mind..I'm no Dolphins fans (go Pats!), but it would be fun to watch Brett and the Tuna go to work, and overall it would make football better. Insert your team here....

It matters not one whit what all those other teams are doing Favre included. The STEELERS will take it all this year!

MNF's Greatest Games: Kansas City-Denver 1994
By Mike Diegnan
ABC Sports Online
On Nov. 11, the Raiders and Broncos played in the 500th regular season telecast of Monday Night Football. To celebrate, we asked fans to vote for their favorite MNF game. They selected the Jets' comeback over the Dolphins in 2000. Another of the top five games took place on Oct. 17, 1994, between Joe Montana's Kansas City Chiefs and John Elway's Denver Broncos.
It was the ultimate battle between two of the game's all-time greats. NFL enthusiasts could debate for hours who was the better quarterback, John Elway or Joe Montana, and on the night of Oct. 17, 1994, they would have gotten their money's worth.
Montana, in the twilight of his career, headed to Kansas City in 1993 after losing his job in San Francisco to Steve Young. In his first season with the Chiefs, he guided them to an 11-5 record and a spot in the AFC championship game. In '94, the three-time Super Bowl MVP led K.C. to the playoffs again in what proved to be his final season.
Meanwhile, Elway entered their '94 meeting without a Super Bowl ring. Deep in the back of his mind, he could remember when Montana and Co. blew him out in Super Bowl XXIV. That night in the 55-10 rout, Montana threw five touchdown passes whereas Elway was picked off twice.
Joe Montana was still magical in 1994.
Both were up to the challenge for their final showdown on Monday Night Football.
The game went back-and-forth all night with neither team gaining a true advantage. It was tied 7-7 after one quarter, 14-14 at halftime and 21-21 as they entered the fourth quarter. Neither quarterback blinked.
"Those kind of battles you get in are the fun games for a quarterback," Montana recalls. "You're going against the guy that can, you know if you let him back on the field, he'll do the same thing back to you."
The game remained tied until Lin Elliott kicked a 19-yard field goal with 4:08 to go to give the Chiefs a 24-21 lead.
Elway, who had negotiated six Broncos comebacks against the Chiefs already in his career, had the Broncos in line for another one until Shannon Sharpe fumbled on the Chiefs' 40 with just 2:45 to go.
Inexplicably, Marcus Allen handed the ball back over to Denver on the very next play.
This time, no one could deny Elway. On a classic Elway drive, he led the Broncos 39 yards on six plays, finishing it off himself with a 4-yard touchdown run to give them a 28-24 lead with just 1:29 left.
But it was more than enough time for Montana.
Even though a sore shoulder forced him to miss significant practice time during the week, the 38-year-old was near flawless in his execution of the two-minute drill, completing 7-of-8 passes as he moved them 75 yards on nine plays.
The Broncos had been given Montana the underneath throws and he worked it precisely, going perfect on the final four plays, 11 yards to Kimble Anders, 12 yards to Derrick Walker, 19 yards to Tracy Greene and then a five-yarder to Willie Davis as Davis extended his arms at the goal line before reaching the pylon for a touchdown.
"He makes a great catch, squeezes it in the end zone, and, and it was right in front of my wife and daughter who happened to be on the field," recalls Montana, who finished the night 34-for-54 for 393 yards, 3 TDs and 1 INT. "She was working for one of the TV stations there, and I kind of knew in the back of my mind that it was closing in on the end of my career, and to be able to do that and have them there was pretty special."
And to make it even more special for Montana, it left just eight seconds on the clock, not even enough time for Captain Comeback to lead the Broncos one more time.
"That's how everybody feels with John," Montana says. "You can't afford to give a player that relishes being in that time of the game any time on the clock. And the best thing you can see is when it says zero, because then you know, even if he's got the ball in his hand, he can't do anything with it."
The same could be said if the ball was in Montana's hands. On that night, Denver was unable to.

I've been a Packer fan my entire life but starting about 3 years ago I started to get Favre-fatigue.
Then the crying, the "I just don't have it in me anymore", puh-leeez.
As far as the Steelers; they're the only AFC team I like and a Steelers/Packers Superbowl (oops I got to pay the NFL a royalty just for typing that don't I) would be the ultimate "who do I root for?!?"

He's been offered $20 mil to stay retired.
I could stay retired on that.
The whispering on the streets this morning is .... the VIKINGS.
The commissioner wants Brett back, and if he goes to the Vikings, there would be a lot of press. It's all about the hype.
But - - - THE VIKINGS?
Please God ... not the VIKINGS!

I really do admire Bret. I would probably be one of the "bring him back ASAP" crowd if I lived up there. I do wish, however, that atheletes (especially the exceptional ones) could retire with dignity while at the top of their game. I do so much respect Jim Brown, Bobby Jones, Lance Armstrong, Anika Sorenstam (very soon, anyway) and the others who walked away while at their best.
Go Cowboys!:D

Hate to see all of this. Perhaps if Bret goes to the ViQueens we need to think of it as an undercover double agent mission. His record in domed stadiums is not the best. With half the Queens season in the Hump... well the divison record may have an extra tilt in our favor.
