I think my R60/6 needs a new battery. Charging system appears to be working well, but the battery is all but dead if I let it sit for more than a couple of days.
Is the Westco the way to go?
Anyone have an opinion on these?

Peter,
I've been using Panasonic AGM batteries in all my bikes since about 1996 with very good results. I'm not sure which battery your /6 uses. My '84 R100RS uses the large 28AH battery.
Go here Http://www.digikey.com and print out the order form for a Panasonic LC-X1220P(small) or LC-X1228P(large) SLA battery. Mail the order form with a check for about $46(small) or $56(large)(last time I checked, this was the price) and they will deliver the battery FREE.

I have the Panasonic AGM battery as well and love it. The bike can sit for a few weeks and it still starts right up. I've had the battery at least four years and it still works like a champ. I highly recommend it. I got mine from GotBatteries.com (http://www.gotbatteries.com)

Looks like the panasonic is the way to go.
update...
I finally got around to installing the panasonic. It fits perfectly, turns the starter over strongly and cannot leak. Cheap too.
I'm very pleased.

What part number would work for a 1996 K1100Lt ?
Tia
I looked at the site but my brain isn't functioning tonight.

Kudos for the AGM Here Too! Dang its heavy.
However, my buddy has an R60/6 like you and he put one of those Odessey dry cells in it last winter, never maintained it over the winter and it started right up. He loves it.

Peter:
I bought a replacement Westco for my '88 R100RT two years ago, and it has been trouble-free. It sat in my garage over two winters in N. Idaho, and so long as it was plugged into my BatteryTender, it has been great. Plenty of starting power.

I'll throw in a rec for the Westco, too. I've got one in both my F650 and my R100. No problems.
Is there much a difference between the Panasonic and the Westco? The Panasonic is definitely less expensive.

WestCo use to just relabel the Panasonics. Not sure if they are still doing that but it is the same AGM battery that Panasonic sells.
The Odyssey is the same thing too, AGM. They use the trademark "DryCell" but it is not a drycell. :)

Just wanted to update - I bought the panasonic (the larger one) about 10 months ago! Works great and the fit was about perfect. Almost exactly the same size as the BMW battery it replaced. It was dirt cheap in comparison to the others and has made it through a CO winter without a tender or any other kind of charging other than a 1 hr ride when the roads were good enough. I would buy another...

74 R90/6, im assuming that i would take the small but not sure, is there any modifications needed to the terminals or the cables to make these fit? The larger Panasonic 1228P is the right battery for that bike. All LWB models get the 28AH battery, all the SWB ones get the 20AH battery. I just installed a Panasonic 1228P in the '74 R90/6 in my garage last night. Fits great - no mods to the terminals or cables. Make sure to get the "P" NOT "AP". The P model has the post with bolts to attach the cables. It's a wee bit taller than stock, but the tool tray still fits.

I'm gonna try the "lawn tractor battery" conversion next time I need one.

FYI. Digi-Key will pay the shipping charges up to 10% of the cost of the battery, which is about $5.80. Shipping to me was $16, so I had to pay. It's still cheaper than buying battery local and paying the sales tax.

I did not send in my check, but it says right on the order form that they will contact you if the shipping costs exceed 10%. My battery was on the fritz, and I was willing to pay the additional charge to get the battery sooner rather than later. I was tempted though to send in the check with the order to see if they would ship it.

Jeff,
I've bought 4 Panasonics from them and never had to pay shipping. I guess if the transportation costs go up enough, we might be asked to help pay shipping.
Still a great deal.
