coming back from gillette i had to leave my bike in north platte nebraska and fly home because of a family emergency. i contacted a shipping co. to arainge for my bike to be shipped back to. it now appears the shipping co. is giving me the run around about when they can pick my bike up and it could be weeks before it is actually on a truck and headed towards the east coast. does anyone have any ideas on how i can get my bike back to ny? i am unable to fly out and ride it home as a family emergency at home requires me to stay here and handle the situation. at this point i am open to any and all sugjestions.

George,
Open up your Anonymous book and see if you can find a local BMW friend there who can deal with the shipping company for you...or find someone else.

i used my anonyomus book to find someone who let me leave my bike in his garage as well as giving me a ride to the airport. i do not want to impose on him and have him deal with the shipping co., i am trying to handle that from here.
if anyone is heading east with a truck/trailer i will gladly pay for your gas if you can pick my bike up and get it to the east coast. otherwise it seems like i am at the mercy of the shipping co.

As a good generalization, the best way to move a bike from point a to point b is to ride it. The hard way is to ship it. Since you are now indisposed, find a friend to ride it. One way airfare, a motel night or two, and a few bucks for meals and gas is probably cheaper than the shipping cost, and certainly less hassle.

If you still want it shipped, my dealer has had the best luck with this company that actually was in the business of shipping pianos...they now also ship motorcycles and have a superior shipping pallet. Reasonable prices also compared to some others that they have used.

and North Platte, NE is in the Central Time Zone...as to how they figure their rates...

i called the shipping co today and they will not be picking my bike up this week but next week instead. they say i will have the bike around the 19th. since i can't go pick the bike up and ride it home i guess that will have to do. to say i am not to happy is putting it mildly.

...and man, are the bikes they ship tuned. :rofl
Serously, glad you got someone to ship it. I've had my 1906 upright piano shipped three times, each by piano specialists. They've always done an excellent job on my family heirloom. Hope it all goes well for you.

final note.........bike will be delivered tomorrow afternoon.
thanks to Bill from N Platte NE who let me store my bike in his garage for what was much longer then i expected. he also drove me to the UPS store, the airport, assisted in loading my bike onto the truck and called me when the shipping co picked my bike up so i would know it was on it's way. MOA members like Bill are one reason this is such a great community. thanks again Bill, i appreciate everything you have done for me. check your mail, there is a special thank you gift enroute for all your troubles.
