Motorcycle, Van Collide; Two Injured
July 27, 2008
MERIDEN, CT — - Two people were injured Friday night when a motorcycle crashed into a van that had crossed into its path on Cook Avenue, police said.

The motorcycle driver, Robert xxxxxxx, was flown to Hartford Hospital with injuries to his head, neck, back, chest and both arms. A hospital spokesman said he was still in critical condition late Saturday.

A passenger in the van, Maria xxxxxxx, of Lewis Ave., was treated at Hartford Hospital for a broken jaw, a broken arm, neck and back injuries and cuts. She was listed in stable condition late Saturday.

The van's driver, Carole xxxxxxx, of Springdale Ave., was charged with assault with a motor vehicle, driving under the influence, reckless driving, possession of marijuana and failure to grant right of way at an intersection, police said.
The van driver was not injured.

Police said Botelho was making a left turn and the motorcycle, which had the right of way, hit the passenger side of the van. The motorcycle left 13 feet of skid marks before the collision, police said.

I know from my run in with a truck - police wanted blood from me & did skid measurements. We did not hit - but I got around the truck - Then lost it .

There are always 2 sides to a story - motorcycle crashed in to a van - a van crashed in to a motorcyclist. Distance between each other. Drivers - both motorcycle and truck were not paying attention. Speed. Sun. Road - one lane two lane - we do not know. Witnesses to this. Who skided - who did not.

Does CT. have no fault as well?

My thoughts & a bit of what I went though.

That is not apparent to me at all - riders die wearing full face helmets - if there is a rapid enough deceleration there will be brain damage and death.

I did a Google search on Motorcycle, Van Collide; Two Injured to see if I could get more information on this. I found about a half dozen verbatim repeats of this story plus another half dozen recent van-motorcycle collisions. The motorcyclists did poorly in every case.

Rupture of a torn aorta is a often fatal consequence of rapid deceleration injuries and is responsible for many people who die in the prehospital setting.

So sorry for all those involved, especially the apparently innocent motorcyclist, I hope all recover.

I see the driver was charged with assault with a motor vehicle, driving under the influence, reckless driving, possession of marijuana and failure to grant right of way at an intersection, DUI is not just a drinking problem.

As to probable cause..."Shut up and pass my that joint!"
