Am seriously considering an Aeroflow windscreen to replace the original stock windshield on a 2000 K1200LT.
Would anyone who has already done so care to post comments?
Negative feedback and reasons welcome, as I am leery of all the wonderful claims.
Thanx,
BrickRider
I have never had a stock screen on my LT so cannot give a direct comparison. I am not sure what brand of screen was on my bike when i purchased it. Looks similar to a Cee-Baileys but it is not one.
The Aero-flow shield is big and kind of ugly but seems to direct the wind around the rider and passenger better than the screen that was on the bike. Only trip of any length I have taken since putting this screen on was 1150+ miles in two days. Was a severe cross wind for part of one day and milage was still 48.8 MPG for the trip.
NOTE:
One negative, it is almost impossible to clean the area between the back baffle and the main screen with out some dissassembly.
If you go to www.bmwlt.com and do a search for aero-flow you will get lots of info.

Thanks for the link. However, I read responses for an hour and I think I'm more confused now, rather than less.
I prefer looking through the screen most of the time;
care about giving the passenger the best ride through least buffeting;
and prefer function over form if function is superior enough.
The complaints regarding distortion range from ok to outrageous.
Which is it? One person says it's fine, the next says couldn't see through it at all.
Makes me think of looking through the bottom of a coke bottle.
Which section of the shield does one look through the most - where the distortion is worst, or where it is the least?
Just some thoughts.

I never look through the shield while driving but would suspect it is lower on the shield due to the "bubble" shape in the middle of the shield. I am going to try and attach three pictures in hopes they may be worth a 1000 words.
attempt at riders perspective.
hope these help and i am NOT a photographer.

Don't have an RT, but one is supposed to look over the screen, not directly through it.
Brick,
not sure where you live but there may be some LT owners in your area that have different shields you can look at. If you are interested you could post a question about are there any LT owners in the vacinity of ______ that have non-stock shields on there bikes.Might even ask them to say what they have. I.e. Cee-Bailey, Aero-Flow, Z-technique, Parrabellum, etc.
just a thought

Roy,
Many thanks for the responses!:wave
The pictures were great! The 3rd one (rider's view) is worth 10,000 words.
From this one I learned what AceJones just stated - one is supposed to look over the Aeroflow shield.
Also noted is that your bike has the same gorgeous color as mine - Pacific Blue.
In fact, I wonder if we've ridden through some of the same territory.
I believe I see the same kinds of bugs smashed above the headlight and on backside of the left rearview mirror! :jester
I live out in the sticks of Northern Michigan. Lots of Hogs, occasional rice burner, but BMWs few & far between. Maybe that accounts for the strange stares from the locals in town. -- At least, I hope it's the bike to which they're giving that look. :scratch
I guess I may have to break down and go to a rally to get a close-up. Haven't been to a national since West Virginia.
Many thanks for your efforts!
Sincerely,
BrickRider
Brick,
I think you might be surprised by the number of LT's in Norther MI. As far as the bugs, they are a self installed option, more bugs means you been riding not washing your bike.
Glad the pictures helped, real hard to describe the shield shape and tell how it may effect your view. My wife and I agree that it more important for me to see clearly Vs her having a little less wind noise.
Is the Grand Rapids dealer a Cee Baileys distributor? If so they may have test shields you can try before you buy.

While I can't say much about an LT application, I have on on my RS and love it. Fit, shape, overall engineering are excellent. Mines easy on and off, which is nice as it starts to look grungy after awhile underneath between the fairings, and the only what to clean that is to remove it.
Hope that helps.

Question:
Whaddaya do when it rains?
If you're looking over the shield, do you not take a lot of spray in the face from cars and clouds?
If it's raining hard and you hafta raise the shield, how the heck do ya keep ridin if ya can't see through the distortion and the water?:scratch

Brick,
since I wear a full face helmet with a face shield so I do not ever look through the shield especially in the rain. One sheet of distorting plastic is enough.
I rarely ever use the power shield option on the LT. I set it and forget it.

I have an aeroflow on my LT trike. It came with the LT when I bought it used. It does definitely have distortion. I deal with it by lowering the windshield when I think I need to pay more attention. I really don't like looking through the "bulge", so usually keep that below my eyesight. I am considering putting the original back on and trying that out. The original owner of the LT was much taller than me, and he liked the aeroflow. We shall see. Be Safe!
