I received a call from Pat Carol the First Aid chair last night and he indicated that he tore up his knee fighting a fire. Pat told me he would not be able to make it to the rally and asked if I would step in and take over the reins. Having worked with Pat last year I knew this was not easy for him and did not hesitate to say yes.

Here's the situation. I know its late and many of the members have already made commitments to volunteer but I'm pulling together the roster for the first aid tent and I need volunteers to help staff the aid tent.

You don't have to have any formalized training to volunteer - it helps but it is not a prerequisite. I will work the staffing so we have have shifts that have volunteers with first aid training on each shift.

The first aid tent opens at 8am on Thursday and volunteers can start signing in on Weds. I'm sticking to Pat's original plan of having the first aid station opened 8am - 8pm and running 4 hour shifts.

If you are interested in volunteering please send me an e-mail with the following information:

Name
Date and time of shift(s)
E-mail address
Cell Phone number
First aid or medical experience

This is not glamorous duty but definitely a important one – mainly sitting in an air conditioned room handing out band aids and aspirin. But occasionally we do have some serious incidents. We will be in close coordination with the Gillette Fire Department who will be providing the Emergency Medical Services. This will be an on call basis so we will be the first responders.

What can I offer in the way of compensation? Not much maybe a cool volunteer hat or t-shirt, a chance to be a part of the rally operations, and an air-conditioned working space. ( Did I mentioned air-conditioned working area?)

FYI – last year was my first rally and volunteering really allowed me to meet a lot of the member of this organization. This is a great organization and if you want to get more involved volunteer at the rally is a great way to do so.

I'm departing for Spearfish on Sat so if you would like to volunteer please contact me ASAP. My e-mail is dburns402@comcast.net and my cell number is (719) 963-9521.

Look forward to seeing everyone in Gillette and to quote the words of Sergeant Phil Esterhaus: Hey, let's be careful out there!

Hello Don,
You should have my info by email. I'm looking forward to working with you! Pat gives you a pretty good recomendation! The hours I sent you are flexable, I"ll work with you any way I can to get the job done. I don't think I put down any Sat hours, not because I don't want to work SAt, just din't have a preference.
See you soon,
Hank (FF/Medic Roanoke VA Fire-EMS, station 4, A shift)

Just checked the Weather Channel and last year during the week of the rally the temps were 90, 99, 99, & 102 degrees. :eek

Did I mention the First Aid station will be located in an air conditioned building. And a nice comfortable sofa? :bliss

Yes, this is a shameless recruiting pitch but I still need volunteers I only have eight thus far. :help

Also I used my limited knowledge of the internet and created a handy little Google Map of some of the medical related sites near the rally.

Here are a couple of excellent websites on motorcycling first aid:

Last year we had approximately 7k people attend the rally and to date I only have 8 volunteers who have answered the call to work first aid this year.

I have 9 shifts to cover and I would like to have a minimum of two volunteers per shift which means I need a total of 19 volunteers.

I need 11 more volunteers so each volunteer would only pull one 4 hour shift.

Any help that you can provide is greatly appreciated.

Charlie, thanks for your support. Will give e-mail you shortly I'm departing Sat but have an event in Denver to cover before leaving (Irish Festival) so I'm packing and trying to get organized. I know I'll forget something.

RE: Pat I talked with Pat and he is bummed. I actually tore my meniscus in August after the rally last year. Fortunately they just cut mine out vice trying to repair it which meant a quicker recovery. From talking with Pat sounds like his is more complicated.:(

Eight days till the rally and I only have 10 volunteers to staff the aid station. I'm leaving Sat and would love to have the scheduled filled by then. I'm only asking for a 4 hour shift.

I can help out, but I don't know when to have you schedule me. We can work it out after I get there. I plan on being there Tuesday. I have 25 years experience as a firefighter/emt, but retired six years ago. :D
