I have a 2006 F650GS with a blown out muffler. First owner modified it from California smog controlled version to a single muffler (don't know the make but it came from Australia). On recent trip to Alaska it blew out.

What are the things to think about when replacing the muffler, besides money?

Is the Two Brothers M2 AL slip-on exhaust (for $350) a good idea? Or what other brand is good. I'm planning on a long trip next from Washington state to Usuhaia, Argentina and back. I'd like to go fairly quietly!

It would be a Staintune pipe.
What actually "blew"out??

If you want quiet, start looking for a standard system.
Everything else is noisy.

I now realize that this muffler was going for the last few months I've owned the bike. I'll post a picture of it as it ended its life - I removed it from the bike today. Lots of missing pieces and stuffing poking out.

A standard system? I've already filled in the right side 2nd muffler space with a tube storage for tire tools; can't go back to standard.

I'm not concerned about really quiet. What I want is reasonably quiet and long life on the road. What fits that criterion?

This bike now has a total of 12,000 miles on it and this was an "aftermarket" muffler system. How long should mufflers last before looking like this?

That dont look good:D

I have heard that some of the early Staintunes had a cracking problem, but the new ones are supposed to be OK.

I have a Staintune on mine, off a TDM850 Yammy that I modified to fit.

I am not too familiar with other exhaust systems sorry.

I have a Two Brothers slip on exhaust and stash can on my Dakar. It is great, but is a bit loud. I am very happy with the set up.
