I've got a spare in the shed I was going to sell for $50 + shipping. They're selling for much more than that on ebay. PM me your address. Paypal accepted.

I talked to a mechanic, he said that if the starter turns, that it's still okay.

So, the starter turns, but won't engage. Makes a helluva noise though. Something about a sprague clutch?!

Not sure I quite understand how that works. Burnsy, I'll keep ya in mind if I really need to replace it. I'm going to have to figure this out this weekend...maybe pull it apart. :doh

Why do I ride these bikes again? :heart

The spraque clutch is not part of the starter, so pulling the starter and taking it apart will not help you. It is my understanding the the sparque clutch is difficult to get to. There may be information of that on the ibmwr k bike web site. Sorry I don't have the url here with me at work.

Folks...

It's "sprag" clutch. When you Google you'll get better results if it's spelled right.

It's a one-way clutch - that uses "dogs" to connect the clutch when the engine isn't turning. Once the engine starts turning - centrifigal force throws the dogs out of engagement and the clutch freewheels. Problems occur when you (1) use inexpensive oil - and it gums up the "dogs" (2) do lots of short rides in damp conditions - where moisture builds up in the crankcase - which then causes rusting of the "dogs"..

It's worth trying some engine oil detergent additive first to see if it can be free'd up. Paul Glaves like Rislone, I like CD-2 Oil Detergent. A strong dose, with a 500 mile ride, followed by several oil changes of quality oil might free it up if it's gummed up. If this doesn't work - you're in for disassembly of the engine, at least partially - to get to the clutch.

There is more info on the IBMWR K-tech pages.

What would you consider a quality oil? eeekk, I can't believe I just asked that. :bolt

I'll try to find the detergent this weekend.

and I'll search the forum for oil opinions. :D
