I changed the fuel filter on my 1996 R1100RT a couple weeks ago. According to the records provided by the previous owner, this had been changed last in 1999, 33000 miles ago. The bike has 75000 miles on it now. I never detected any symptoms of a problem - I changed it because the spec called for it at 24000 miles and even then I was a bit late doing it. I'm not sure whether this really needs to be done or not, but thought I'd try it and go for the so-called peace of mind of having done it, and maybe even learn something in the process. I was curious what it might look like inside, so I cut the old one in half with a hacksaw and pulled the paper filter out. Not that it proves anything one way or the other - I didn't find anything in the filter that looked like foreign material - but here's a photo of it anyway. Any silver particles are the debris from cutting through the aluminum filter body.
