Darn the luck! I lost the right side black plastic triangular side cover the shields the rear shock preload adjuster on my 1996 R1100RT. I covered the route on my bicycle looking for it with no luck.

Guess I have to buy a new or used one. The trouble is; a new one is about $80 and used ones are hard to find. Any suggetsions out there fort a replacement?

Thanks in advance.

Try www.beemerboneyard.com and keep an eye out for someone parting out an R1100RT or R1150RT on the www.ibmwr.org Marketplace. Ebay or Craigs lList maybe?

Rant on:
I hate those side covers. The tabs on the bottoms get old and crack and rattle. The front support "finger" breaks off easily when you remove the cover, especially in cold weather. For such a great bike, what a POS fairing piece.
:Rant off.

I have a pair of them from my RT-P, (has a small cut out for the crash bars on each one) the lh one has had the stinking pin glued on but works until the next time you get in a rush to pull the panel off and the bond breaks. I don't need them, so make me an offer if interested.

kgadley01 has a solution. I have found some obscure items on eBay as well as a few items I never knew I needed. :laugh

I'm interested in the Right side panel as you are on the bike. Would you take $25?

Good luck on eBay or other part places. Mine came without one, lost the day I bought it. We couldn't find it on the road either. So I bought a new one at $80 and lost it a while back. I'd been searching for a long time. No real luck. I found one on eBay, damaged that went for over $45 shipped. I bought my last on at Chicago BMW for $60. Just waiting for it to arrive.

This time though, I'm going to find a way to wire the darn thing to my motorcycle so if it comes loose, it'll still be attached. I'm not going to take any chances with it.

Let me look at it, I need to see if it's in good enough condition to warrant $25. I just remembered one of them has some marks looks like something hot got a little too close, I know he RH side is functionally sound, just maybe not cosmetically. If it's in good shape I'll take $25, if it has the marks, I'll email images and then you can make me a fair offer.

I was warned a few weeks back when I got my 04 RT about the "fragile" condition of these tabs. Fragile is a bit of an under statement. No problems with the right side but the first time I touched the left side, bam broke a tab and the pin thing. $@#% !Tried the gorrilla glue fix and realized quickly I was backing up. Checked with the boneyard and they had them available,...at the time. I kinda got a redneck moment and thought what the heck I'll try some alternative engineering first.

I took a small .... 1/8" drift pin (cold roll pin) I had and drilled a hole where the pin broke off. Tapped the pin in and then drilled the pin itself and tapped it on the pin. Took every bit of 5 minutes to fix. The best I've come up with the tab so far is electrical tape. The tape and tab are holding on but I'm hear to testify that the pin "ain't breaking off" again! Something to consider next time.

I broke the locator pin off of the left side cover and rode without it for a year. I'm WAY TOO CHEAP to pay $80 for one of those plastic covers. One afternoon, BRAINSTORM!! Check it out.

The lower tab broke on my left one 3 years ago, I has not fallen off yet. YMMV

Smear a little vaseline on the rubber grommet the pin pokes into. The cover will go on and off much easier, but not easy enough to fall off.

The left side one usually stays on because of the handle.

I'm not sure, but there may be an issue with Vaseline breaking down the rubber components in that grommet. I had a similar but used silicone grease instead. Won't deteriorate the rubber and is slick as a frog in a pond.
