Help!

2002 1150 GS w/ 4 yr old sealed battery won't start. Owner hastily and repeatedly restarted without designated wait interval to elminate ABS default code. Bike did start with ABS activated.

Bike sat approx 3 days. On next start metallic noise was heard. Bike did start though and after 2 more restarts for short trips on the same day bike made similar metallic-like noise. On next start attempt made the same day, however, the motor turned over with normal cranking speed but would not fire.

Can I safely attempt bump start or is best to have it towed? Any ideas as to problem as being due to solenoid coil, starter relay or - - ? Any list of diagnostic steps/tests appreciated.

Thanks

Your description is a little hard to understand. Explain the "metallic noise" more, is it a loud clicking or a grinding noise.

Loud clicking comes from low battery or bad solenoid. If battery seems good, when starter is clicking, use a small hammer and while cranking/clicking give a sharp tap on the solenoid with the hammer, if it starts, then solenoid is sticking.

If grinding noise, then other possibilities such as, drive gear, ring gear, bendix. Almost have to hear the noise to know.

Depends on who is doing the bumping, I'm also not sure if there is any issue with clutch switch preventing this.

If you need a starter, look up the Valeo pn and contact these guys http://www.wagneralt.com/, best price I could find on new and great service, they generally deal as a distributor, but took care of me superbly.

My one and only reply. Turns out to have been a "sticky starter".
