View Full Version : My first limited spline lube today. Baby steps...
I did a quick 2 1/2 hour back spline lube on my 88 K75. The entire spline job is not due for another 6500 miles so I did not bother. Mostly, I have never done this kind of work. My friend, the previous owner of the bike helped and made me aware that the shaft swivel joint is beggining to feel knotched and may want to look at replacing it next year when the full spline and cluth lube is performed. We also noticed very little need for new lube. It looked well lubed even three years after the last lube, according to the previous owner.
By the way; the job I performed today was to remove the back tire, drive and pull the shaft. Cleanned the two spline areas and insert the shaft. I also drained all tranny gear box fluids and replaced them. Call me crazy, but I believe the bike shifts better.
Are there any new or barely used shafts for these bikes available. What's the average cost?

Used drive shafts you likely don't want because of wear on the rear. However, wouldn't hurt to check some of the places that specialize in parting out BMW bikes.
The last time I checked, a K75 new driveshaft was about $225, but that was six years ago and they have likely gone up - like everything else. :(

$296 at Chicago BMW.
What spline lube did you use?

I used the red BMW product. There was still enough left in the spline from three years ago to make me trust it. It works well.

I was also told to lube my spline. Due to the fact I was having rough shifting. IS this the proper remedy or first step?

If you are having trouble downshifting 3-2 and 2-1 you need to lube the clutch splines. Do it soon or the clutch plate and trannsmission shaft will strip.
The splines referred to above are the driveshaft splines. They should be lubed every 10000 miles with Honda MOLY 60 paste.
My drive shaft splines were not done by the POs and have significant wear.
