I changed the gear oil in the transmission on my '88 K75C with 28,000 miles on it last night. The last time the oil was changed was back in December, and I've put 7,000, mostly interstate, miles on it since then. The drain plug was FULL of metal filings. I don't think the magnet could have held any more. The bike has been reluctant to do a 4/3 downshift without proper rev-matching for the past few thousand miles. I've had a spline lube done, and it showed a little wear on the splines, but nothing horrible.

I understand proper technique for shifting a bmw transmission. I guess i'm looking for advice on 1) how bad a sign this is, 2) how to prolong the life of the transmission and 3) anything else I may be doing wrong. Thanks in advance for your help.

Sorry to say, but immediately send it in for a rebuild. I had a similar issue with the transmission on my 1981 R80G/S, just got it back two days ago after a $1K rebuild!

I had three bad gears, and honestly the trany was only making a slight whire between 4-5K rpm's in 4th gear... here's what the drain plug looked like....

If the filings were a metallic paste, I wouldn't be too worried. If it was chunky something may be destroying itself.

I stuffed a telescoping magnet up inside the tranny through the drain hole and fished out a few chunks... this was after finding only paste on the drainplug.

My drainplug looked almost exactly like the one posted. I guess I'll wait a little while for some symptoms to develop while the bike is in gear before replacing the transmission. Thank you very much for your help.
