We are needing some help finishing off the tail of our 1986 R80 . The Luggage rack seems to have been removed and we have seen in parts books where there are two options on this bike. We have posted (hopefully) a pic of what we have and the holes where what we need goes. Can someone post a pic of the option or options of what we are missing so we can either find, make or buy one to put on here please. We would like to carrie some things on the tailrack but as you can see we dont got.
Thanks as always for all the help.
Jim and Esther.

PS the mechanical parts seem to all be working good and getting great gas milage without the sever vibs . :clap :clap Thanks to all your fine help.:bow

Grumpy,

Have a look at Max's fiche:
http://www.maxbmwmotorcycles.com/fiche/MainDiagrams.asp?VIN=6247508
See "Set Luggage Carrier"

There is a piece that connects to your "handle", but it slopes the same as the seat tailpiece, not flat like the earlier twin shock bikes. I added this to my '88 RS, but find that the tailpiece flexes if you put too much weight on it. Good for maybe a tent, but don't try to stack too much stuff on it.

The fiche shows some additional parts that add a better platform and braces that go down to your luggage rack mounts. This looks lots stronger, but will run you another $200.

+1 for schuldt's comments.

The additional piece that joins with the grab bar you have in the picture is a pretty flimsy system and not recommended for carrying anything of consequence. As it is, the whole grab bar is anchored to the rear cowl which is made of fiberglass and is not intended to take heavy loads.

My 85 R80 just has the grab bar without the little extra rack, which I felt was useless. See below for a photo of the aftermarket rack that originally was on the bike when I bought it used (sold the rack, didn't like the look of it).

We dont need much for weight we just want to haul about 5 lbs but the pieces are to long to fit in the boxes. And the 200 for the additional parts from the fisch is a bit more than we want to spend on it. You are right about the aftermarket looking a bit out of place. Would work but would rather build one or find one that was original if possible.
Thanks for the pics . Would still like to see an original fit one if anyone has one on.
Thanks for all

Well, we all know that certain recommendations are given to protect the manufacturer. We know that we are not suppose to ride faster than 80 mph with side cases, but we all have gone faster. I have the other luggage piece on my bike that you are looking for and I have put more like 20 lbs if not more on it. I had 2 duffelbags on it on one road trip. Maybe not ideal, but it worked and held up fine.
I have seen these parts for sale on ebay. You may also want to check with some of the beemer salvage yards. There is one in Ohio and one in Texas that I know of. How much are you willing to spend? I can check with my BMW guru, who has a ton off old stuff to see if he has one flying around his shop; if you want me to, just send me a private message.
