Hi there,
My 2000 rt stopped running after about a 200 mile ride. It was raining pretty good and the the tach just went to 0 rpms. The motor kicked in again and restarted but quit soon after and refused to restart. This happened last year and I resoldered the ground wires and the bike has run for 1 year. When I turn the bike on the tach will sometimes jump up to different rpm levels but still refuses to start. Any suggestions?
Thanx

Look at the posts on my thread about Hall Sensor Guru, some great info and if you find the link for hall sensor info, look at the page about trouble shooting, it mentions tach symptoms.

Thought it might help to post the link from Mick here too. Thanks Mick! Just got done building my test box, now need some way to test the test box.

This is one of the very best sites for HES data:

He takes you through building a test box that you can
use for setting the static timing. You can also just put it
in the same spot as the one you take out and it will be very
close to being correct.

Mooseel,
Thanx for the tip on the Hall Sensor guru. What he says happens, is happening, except that my bike doesn't start in gear with the clutch in. I don't think it ever has. I've always needed to be in neutral.
I'll post if I can fix things.

Fizziks,

Was your kickstand down when you tried to start it in gear? The kickstand has a kill switch in it to prevent starting in gear with the stand down.

After you fix your Hall Sensor, you an cut the wires going to the clutch switch and wire them together. That'll solve your "bike doesn't start in gear with the clutch in" problem.

Those are classic HES failure signs. You can rewire your existing HES using Teflon insulated wire or just buy a new one from www.beemerboneyard.com and wait for the next failure. To my knowledge, Bosch has never changed the type of wire they use in that harness and it will again fail once the insulation breaks down.

You may also hear the coil firing now and then when you see the tach wiggling. Definite signs of a failing HES. This is a pretty common failure on the R1100 Oilheads but not on the R1150 for some reason.

Check out www.4windsbmw.org message board. There is someone on there who has a similar problem to yours. It sounds like he is familiar with replacing a Halll Sensor and he should be local to you.

Definitely sounds like the HES has failed.
"To my knowledge, Bosch has never changed the type of wire they use in that harness and it will again fail once the insulation breaks down". I won't say this statement is indefensible, but I replaced my HES ($220 for a new replacement at beemerboneyard and about 1 hours work) at about 80,000 miles when the bike was about 6 years old. It has given me no further trouble in the last 4 years and 50,000+ miles.

Hi there,
Thanx for all your input. I changed the HES with a used unit from beemerboneyard ($110). Also changed the fuel filter, air filter, and alternator belt while everything was wide open. Put about 250 miles on the bike in two days and everything seems to be working fine. I'll try to rewire my old unit using teflon wire, I saw that idea in a post. Again, thanx for your input.
