Pushing 6,000 miles on the 2008 1200GS. No complaints yet. I drove to Madison, Wisconsin Thursday afternoon after looking at the radar. Didn't look too bad but on the way it got way worse. While filling up at Oxford, heading south, driving in rain, a man who was filling his truck, wearing a HD shirt told me that I-39 was closing as we spoke. He ran through 2 feet of water to get out of Portage. I headed to the Wisconsin dells and got onto I90-94 heading south to Madison, more water on the road and miles of traffic backed up. Stayed at Madison Thursday night and Friday at noon I-90-94 was closed north. This is a hugely busy interstate from Chicago-Milwaukee to Minneapolis. So, headed NE and had to make a long detour to get home. Bike did well in the rain.

Question...my MPG reading on the computer keeps dropping after reading about 40-42 for the first 2,000 miles. Now the average has dropped to 27 and I have manually checked it and it is constantly running at about 42-48 MPG.

6,000 service is coming up in a couple of weeks.

I have a 2009 800GS on order and was wondering what you folks thought of getting ABS on such a bike. It is a bike for me to ride locally and on trails for sure but also for the boys and other visitors when they show up for some riding fun. I really like the looks and am wondering about the extras.

I love the 1200GS even more than I thought I would. Very smooth and fast and I like the adjustable suspension among many other things. It is a tall bike that takes some practice to mouth, especially with the luggage stuff on back.

Riding today I was wondering if there is such a thing as a leg rest that could attach to the BMW bars that protect the engine. The pegs that attach to the heads are way to constraining for my longer legs.

No EWS to this point. Glad for that.

Thanks and have a great day...

Noticed the same thing on my RT, only it reads L/100km here in Canada. Anyway, reread the owners manual and it advises to reset the on board computer.(read the manual, it tells you which buttons on the dash to use). Did that and now it reads normal again, about 5L/100 km.

I believe the latest software update fixes this. There was a bug in the GS average MPG software where the mileage would start dropping at about 3,500 miles if it wasn't reset. For the moment - simply reset it whenever you fill up (that's what I do..) and plan on having the bike visit a dealer for a software-brain dump. Mention this symptom to them - the SIB for the software specifically mentions this bug.

Thanks for the info.

SIB?Service Information Bulletin - dealers get these telling them what to do.

Get the ABS, the brakes on F800s are great enough to lock the wheels fast. The first time you ride on the street, you'll be glad you had it.

Tweety...thanks, I think I'll take your ABS advice. It is a lot of money but for safety, it is worth it.
