I was wondering how hard it is to check/replace a clutch on a 1200 GS? I have excessive play in the trans or clutch. It's not in the driveshact or final drive because I can press down on the front u-joint thru the rubber while I move the rear tire back & forth and there is no slop. If its not to hard or take to special of tools I thought about tearing into it to find out whats wrong. I am not a bike mechanic but I do have some limited mechanical experience. I have tied to just adapt to it but it is just too much. Its to the point that i'm ready to trade it in on another GS or an RT!!!!!!! Please give me your wisdom of what might be wrong.
Thanks, Ron

Ron,

How are you determining you have excess slop/play?

Being able to rotate the tire 1-2" with the bike in gear and the clutch engaged is not a fault with these bikes.. it's normal. There is play built into the gear-mesh on the transmission (if there wasn't - it would seize up rather rapidly) - and that multiplies by the time you feel it in the rear wheel.

How much can you rotate the rear wheel with the bike in gear?

Don, I just got a chance to get back on - line and check replys to my question.
I just went out to the garage and put the bike up on the center stand and with it in first gear i measure about 2 1/2 " lash on the sidewall as I move the tire back & forth. Do you think this is ok? I hope so because it would mean my bikes ok but at the same time its dissapointimg that it has so much. Thanks for your help. I gotta check the rest of the replys ans see what elce was said. Ron

Sounds perfectly normal to me. Why does this dissapoint you? It doesn't effect the riding ability of the bike.

What made you tjhink you have a bad clutch?

Clutch slip is usually noticed when you crack the throttle and the engine revs but you do not see a noticeable increase in speed, eventually you won't get anywhere.

On my '05 GS the hand guard slipped a little and kept the clutch lever slightly depressed. I felt the slippage when I accelerated and took it to the dealer. he found the handghuard had slippped a little I have not had any propblems with the clutch since we adjusted it.
