Just got my first BMW bike. Lots of previous Japanese of all sorts (inc GL1800 wing) but wanted to try one of these. Having great fun so far except for the radio. Bought one with a radio but it quit and factory said it's not repairable. I suspect finding a used one will be unlikely. Any thoughts from those of you more experienced than I with BMW radios would be appreciated. Any way to replace it and maintain use of the handlebar controls in any way other than buying a new BMW replacement for big bucks? Appeciate the thoughts.

I'm not too much help with radio tech, you might look up and electronics repair shop to take a look at it, assuming your getting all the right voltages and grounds. check fuses etc.

To replace it check http://www.beemerboneyard.com.

Good Luck. I never bothered with the radio, use Zump 550 w/11gb of music= 54 hours of listening.

I replaced my stock radio with a Pioneer radio, Polk marine rated speakers, and a marine rated wired interface. I mounted the interface on a RAM mount above the clutch. It's not quite as integrated as the stock unit, but works fine.

You can do the same with just about any radio with a wired remote. Most remots today are for boats (marine interface), but so long as you can get a wired remote you can hook it up.

Or if you really want to keep the stock radio, I still have mine. All of it. Speakers, radio, remote, etc. except for the security code. I keep meaning to take it down to my local dealer to get the code for it, but it just has't been a high priority. It's the standard cassete radio version if interested, PM me. If you want some details or pictures of the Pioneer install PM me with an e-mail address and I can send you some pics.

I'm with Moose. Portable audio technology has improved so much in the last 10 years, and you get so much more bang for the buck, that it no longer makes sense to pay a fortune for an OEM radio.

I met a vacationing Michigan cop at the BMW dealership in Reno a couple of months ago. He had tricked out his 1200RT with an amazing wireless radio/phone/detector setup that all went into dual-speakers in his helmet, all on bluetooth. He could easily take a call in mid-ride by pressing a button on the left-side bluetooth control. Probably cost a fortune, but it showed what's possible.

I want to get me one! :eat

I gave a whole radio kit to a buddy last year that I had bought for an 1100RT I sold soon after. Turned out he didn't have the prep kit in his bike so he never put it in. If he still has it, you can arrange something for very cheap - like postal costs - to get it. It's like new. In any case, don't pay much. They are out there. I think I paid $150 for this one. I'll send him an e-mail now.

Update: just heard from my buddy. He still has the radio, in the same box I shipped it in. Get me your e-mail, we'll figure out shipping and you can send him the money. Neither of us wants payment for the radio...we'd rather someone just get use out of it.

Best thing I can say about the BMW radio is that it offers excellent aerodynamics...while in flight toward the nearest open dumpster.

Is there anyway to change the FM1, FM2, FM3 settings without opening the radio door? I bought the bike used, (02 r1150rt) and I do have to wonder if there was a remote to do this other than the one on the handlebar.
