Hey all.

This is my first post, but I love all the help in here!

I recently pulled my 1977 R100RS out of my shed where it had been sitting since 1989 waiting for my wife to allow me to spend some $ on it. Ended up with new clutch, re-built carbs, new coils/plugs/wires/points, new tires, and a bunch of minor cosmetics. Only thing left that doesn't work is my clock :(

One thing that worries me, though, is that the voltmeter is consistently at 14 volts or higher, and pegs as long as the engine speed is above 4000. I'm guessing a faulty regulator somewhere, but will this do any damage to my battery or other electricals if not corrected?

Thanks for any advice!

You can about bet on a bad regulator. It should run about 14.2v, but if you're normally higher than that, you will overcharge the battery. Easy to replace.

Be sure and read what's happening at the battery terminals...that's where it really counts. Typically you can't trust a voltmeter of unknown quality mounted somewhere upstream of the battery. A faulty regulator would result in voltages approach 16v at 4K RPM...at least those are the kinds of numbers one sees if you bypass the regulator as a part of checks of the charging system.

Thanks...kinda thought so.
