I have a 78 R60/7 that I'm working on.

Today noticed a pool of fuel from the left carb while bike was on sidestand. Looks like the float needs to be adjusted a smidge - OK. Meanwhile I was about to pour the excess fuel from the float bowl back into my tank and noticed orange crystallized jelly flakes on the outer lip of the fuel tank gasket - the shelf between the opening and the tank itself.

I checked the cap, and the rubber gasket on the cap itself is toast. A couple of good whacks on a rag on the floor yielded more junk - I scraped and cleaned the rest off the cap, and removed the residue from the tank itself, being careful not to drop any unwelcome guests into the tank.

How critical is this gasket on the cap, and can I get a new one? It should be providing a seal between the cap and the tank. I definitely think I did the right thing by getting rid of the old stuff, but not sure what the next step is.

Thanks much!

(Beastly hot here in NYC but not too hot to ride. I was cruising Queens and had a cab driver give me the thumbs up and shout "BMW Take Over De World, Mon!" so it's still a good day...)

My original one was a cork gasket. I found some cork material with about the right thickness at the local auto parts store. I transferred the dimensions and cut a new one. Been working fine.
