Could anyone provide the step by step instructions on oil change for 07 RT?:bow

I'm not much of a mechanic, but I think I can get through this: Before draining oil, make sure you have an oil filter wrench that will fit on the oil filter that's currently installed (DAMHIK). Make sure you have the correct replacement filter and a tad more than 4 quarts of oil.

Before doing the change I normally run the bike to get the oil warmed up and thinner. It drains better that way and hopefully carries away the crud. Remove the cap where you normally add oil. Then I take out the drain plug and let the oil drain for several minutes. When no more oil drips out, I replace the drain plug, with the new crush washer they sold you when you bought the filter, and then remove the oil filter. Let oil drain for a few minutes.

Replace with new filter. Before screwing it on, wet the rubber seal lightly with oil, so it seals well when you screw it on. I only fasten it hand tight, but firmly. At that point add the 4 quarts of oil. Run the engine for a few minutes, put on center stand, and check the oil level. It will likely take a little less than another quarter of a quart.

Now the real mechanics can correct the above. :blush

Not a bad idea to put some new oil in the new filter before you screw it in. This will reduce the time required to establish normal oil pressure at the first start-up after the change.

Anyone know the torque spec for the drain plug?

Last time i looked it was:

11 Nm for the filter
32 Nm for the plug

I'm new to the R1200, but isn't this three (3) quarts and part of a fourth (4th)?

I checked the r1200gs website. They list the oil capacity as 4 liters, or 4.2 qts.

Unless you're going to spend 10 minutes 'rocking the bike back and forth' on the centerstand during the oil-draining process, you never quite get all the fluid out.

I have found that 4 quarts is spot on for my R1200RT, given that some residual oil is still left in the engine.

Good Luck.

4 Qts is the perfect amount in my 07GSA
