In the early '70's I bought a new R75/5 at the then-dealer in Marin County, CA. What I'm now trying to recall is whether it was a 1972 or 1973 model. At the time they told me that mine was among the first with the new longer wheelbase. Does that pinpoint the model year?

They were called 1973-1/2 models.

The various parts fiche indicates that the LWB is "from 1/73".

I own a 1973 R75/5 made in December of 1972 that is LWB. It was acquired from the original owner in 1989.

Another of many examples that shows dates and model information cannot be treated as exact. Often times, parts were used interchangeably during assembly if both were available in the parts bins when introducing new parts or phasing out old parts. You'll get a mixed bag during transition periods like this.
