I finally made my second oil change on my 2007 RT and with that I changed to the Purolator PL10241 filter. I looked over all I could read on the internet about filters and it seems this is the filter that works for my application. I have the Wunderlich engine guard on my machine and with the added length of the filter (minimal length increase) I'm good to go. The thing that I look at over so much information I learn here on these pages is when the machines get older more and more people will let you know how they been fixing many items with non-BMW oem and I'm okay with not using the oem filter. I also bought another which I already had a $4 cup filter wrench for the Purolator filter.

And your point would be that you saved a couple of bucks on the filter for your expensive bike?

No maybe to you I look like I'm cheap and maybe I am. Someone on a BMW message board was good enough to let me know about a Purolator oil filter that is very good quality that works on the Oilhead R motor. If you choose to use only the BMW genuine parts good for you, I don't and won't.

I also don't wear BMW clothing to ride either, I happen to really like Firstgear stuff so I guess I'm not in the groove with that either. My helmet is an Arai, and yessir that's not BMW either. Oh my, the only thing is the bike that's BMW...I hope they don't come and take it from me!!

Regardless of where the filter comes from has anyone taken one apart to see if it provides the same amount of protection as the OEM does.

It's been done for Airheads but just wondering if someone has done it for Hexheads yet.

For my Airhead I've resolved to use OEM. For my Hexhead I'm open to suggestions.

Take care.

Haven't seen that done for a Hexhead filter.

A couple of years ago, when I still had an 1150 oilhead, a guy on the 1150R board (who was a bike tech with his own independent bike shop) cut open a BMW filter and also a supposedly equivalent after-market filter. To him, and anyone else who saw the pictures, there was no comparison. He would only use the BMW filter on his 1150R. I can't recall what brand of after-market filter it was.

Maybe a case of false economy.

The filter discussion I was referring to someone had a link to a california group that tested and rated oil filters and I'm at a loss for the link. That is where I came up with the Purolator information and part number(s). Their is also another Purolator number but it is quite a bit longer than the filter I had mentioned in my first post here. Someone had even mentioned that Mann-Hummel who makes the BMW oem also makes filters for Purolator. I have no solid knowledge of the relationship of the two companies but I do know the Pure One filter gets really good marks for quality.

IMPORTANT - since this thread always seems to become contentious - as a moderator I *WILL* shut it down if it does. Consider this fair warning..

Now - what I do - and NOT what I tell anyone else to do..

I use BMW filters/oils/parts exclusively while under warranty. While Moss-Magnuson will protect you IF you buy a part that an aftermarket manufacturer has specified for your bike - it won't protect you if it's a filter someone on the net found that seems to fit and work, and it causes a problem. The filter manufacturer also won't protect you if THEY didn't specify the use of the part for your bike.

I do not expect to have any engine related warranty claims - but if I did, I'd feel much better about pursuing them if I can show my dealer my receipts for filters and oil at regular intervals that meet BMW specifications. The easiest way to make the dealer happy is to buy the parts from them.

That's what I do. It's not what I'd suggest anyone else do - and if you want to debate it - feel free, but I won't participate beyond this.

And don't start slinging arrows at other people - everyone is entitled to a cogent politely expressed opinion.

You are more than free to use any parts you want to on you bike. But keep in mind that this filter (Purulator PL10241) IS NOT LISTED IN THE APPLICATION CHART FOR THE R1200RT. As such, purolator and BMW can and will deny a warranty claim to an oiling system failure. Based on the cost of repairing the eng. on my RT, I think that I will use one of the three known APPROVED filters on my bike. (BMW, K&N, Mann) The extra cost every 10 000km is a small price for piece of mind. If there was a cheaper one listed and approved, I might consider using it. BTW at BeemerBoneYard you can get a four pack of Mann filters for the R1200's for about $50.00 and the crush washers for $2.25(4). This works out to about $15.00 per oil change including shipping.

Or, you could order a filter and crush washer from an online BMW dealer such as Chicago BMW and pay $12.56 for the "real deal"...:stick

I was looking around the other day and it came to me that Calsci was the place that I found all the neat filter information. Not all of the information is about motorcycles but it has alot of pictures of filters cut open along with information on how bad some of the most widely advertised filters are. I found a filter cutter on the net and plan to buy one wondering why I never bought one in the past. I only had one engine ever come apart on my that was my own and it was an Olds cutlass that had a big crank problem, I guess that's why they traded and I ended up with it. I did help with race cars for many years and we had $45,000 engines that self destructed no matter what you did to them. With what I have seen before in my years of being around mechanical things that's why I do what I do with filters and oil. I'm going to cut open my filter and I expect to find no babit in the can so I'm just going to waste my money on a cutter.
