I have a 1982 r100RT, with the RT fairing, but with the ignition lock on the side of the headlight (!)
i want to move it from that nearly inaccessible spot to the fairing spot where it belongs.
Anyone done this? Tips and advise greatly appreciated!

The RT fairing has a nice spot right in the middle of it for the ignition switch to go. You can purchase all of the mounting parts for the ignition switch from Max BMW.
http://www.maxbmwmotorcycles.com/fiche/MainDiagrams.asp?mospid=47888

Mounting parts required:
10 61321243278 nut BUY 2 $5.70
11 63121357504 wave washer BUY 1 $2.10
12 61321243279 hex nut BUY 1 $5.70
13 61321243267 step plate BUY 1 $3.00
14 61321243268 ring nut BUY 1 $6.30

You may be able to reuse your ignition switch, but I am not 100% certain on that. You would definitely need some extra wiring.

As I recall, all RTs came with the iginition switch in the faring. Is it possible yours started life as a naked bike? With the ignition switch in the headlight, it makes me wonder how you actually reach it? The fairing and inside pockets must make it rather tight. My big ham hands would have a real problem in there.

I checked the VIN, and this actually was an RT. The Red/Smoke color also seems correct. I am thinking someone went naked, then regretted it. That would also explain the butt splice on the front turn signal wires - which signals also do not work.
According to my little gray BMW partsbook, the swithes etal are supposedly (?) the same
it is a very tight squeeze in there. The previous owner just left the key in there. Isuppose I could stick something in front of it - I don't think thieves are too interested in these airheads, are they?
Bike is "Road Warrior" not "Collector" - I am more security than originality concerned here.

It's for sure the same ignition switch
